.350 Rem. Mag. with "The Load?"

I'm the proud new owner of a Remington 600, .350 Rem. Mag. I was curious about cast load data, and can't find much. From my understanding, 35 Whelen and .350 RM data are close to interchangeable. I have heard of folks using the 13 grains of Red Dot load with cast bullets in the Whelen. How about the .350? What bullet weights/molds would I want to use? Any guess as to the velocity range?

247 gr bullet 9.5 gr Red Dot 1075 ; 14 gr 1385

I believe Ed Harris's original ( the load ) was 16 gr of 2400 in any full sized military case with any normal sized bullet be it jacketed or cast.

Later on while trying to use up a caddy of red dot he worked up the 13 gr of red dot ( the load)

Ive never tried red dot but the 16 gr of 2400 is a good load. It's rarely my best load but it's always a good one.

The 350 Rem Mag is a very versatile and greatly under appreciated cartridge; I have shot everything from 0.361" round balls to 273 gr FN in my 350's. The RCBS 360-200 FN shoots real well, and would probably be a good starting point. The new Lee 35 cal mold looks like a clone of the RCBS.

The older IMR & Accurate Powder manuals had several loads listed along with pressures.

Here are some loads that I have handy that were chronographed:

from REM M SEVEN KS 20" bbl
13 gr SR-7625, NOE 360-180 WFN (1,400 fps)
9.0 gr REDDOT, LEE 158 FN (1,300 fps)
3.0 gr REDDOT, Lyman .360 RB (850 fps) surprisingly accurate at 75 yds -- (4) touching and (1) flier for a max group of 1.5"
48 gr IMR 4320, 247 gr FN (Accurate Molds custom my design) (2,100 fps)


I have more loads from my other 350's XP-100 15" & 673 22" that I will post, these are on a flash drive and written in a notebook.

Full case of Trailboss, NOE 360-180 HP --173 gr (1,700 ish)
?? gr RL-7, RCBS 360-200 FN (2,500 fps)

actually ED went to 2400.
he found the lower pressures and possibility of higher velocity's a little more desirable.
'the red-dot load' was based within certain parameters and even within them the pressure spiked to 45-k psi.
outside them? well...
anyway if you can't find a load between 16 and 19 grs of 2400 that shoots well you need another mold.

Thanks for posting that round ball load and your accuracy results.
I want to try something like that in my 35 whelen. Sounds like a great plinking and small game load.

3.0 gr RED DOT, 0.361" RB rolled in XLOX dried 3 hours at 60F slightly tacky when loaded, seated flush sprue up.... some rolled while seating and the sprue was in the neck (rotated 90 deg) I used particle board for seating stem / surface and thumb force. Velocities at 18 deg F --- 860, 842, 804, 821, 816. Out of a 20" bbl they are still pretty loud like a 38 SPL. Not able to upload pictures of RB loads will try later.

Hear are some more 350 Rem Mag Loads with cast:

40.5 gr RL-7, (2) alloy pure tip, lino shank 239 grs, 2,075 fps {accurate mold with (3) cavities one being a tip cavity the other two 247 & 273 gr's having same profile}
49 gr RL-7, 200 gr RCBS, 2,530 ft/s
15.0 gr Trailboss (87%) NOE 360-180 WFN HP (173 gr) 1,775 fps (8 deg F) 22" Rem 673
50.0 gr IMR 4320 (273 gr Accurate Custom Mold) -- 2.75" group at 175 yds XP-100R velocities not recorded in spreadsheet
52.0 gr IMR 4320 (247 gr Accurate Custom Mold) -- I think the velocities are in the 2,250 fps range (not recorded on spreadsheet).
55.0 gr IMR 4350 (273 gr) 2.25" @175 yds Rem SEVEN KS 20"
56.0 gr H5010 (247 gr) accurate load and pleasant load to shoot in a 5-3/4 lb rifle but unburned powder in case and bottom of bbl. I have several lbs of slow powder I would like to use up, IMR 7828 was similar.

Jacketed Loads;

I have several jacketed loads (180 gr SSP to 250 gr SP's & RN's) but the load below has been my standard since 1995.

52.0 gr AA2015, 225 gr Sierra SP (2,450 ish in 15" XP100R IIRC) I think this load is about 125 to 150 faster in the 20" bbl.'s. This load punched a 5/8" diameter hole in my 3/8" thick gong.

I faced the lead tip off of 250 gr Hornady SPs to be under 2.80" and they shot well.

Thanks for the detail on loading the rb load, i'll try it soon in my whelen.
Looks like the op of this thread certainly got some good info on loading for his 350 rem.

What kind of accuracy do you get with that 49 gr. rl 7 and 200 gr. rcbs boolit load? 2500 fps. is some pretty serious speed.

The 200 gr RCBS load with RL-7 is usually under 3" at 175 yds, I shot these a few months ago at 225 yds with my XP100 and the (5) shot group was right at 4". All of my 350's have 1:16" twist bbls. When I first tried these I was very surprised with the results knowing that my better shooting loads (247 & 273 grs) were with slow for cartridge powders. I am on the fence on which rifle and load to use for our late firearm deer season that opens Jan 1st. I want to try the 180 gr NOE and the high speed 200 gr RCBS, where I hunt the shots could be from about 90 yds to further than you should shoot. The custom shop 350's (KS & MS) seem to shoot cast loads better than the Rem 673. May just be my perception as on a couple of occasions the 673 started getting real squirrelly almost like loose mounts.

In his article Cast bullet loads for military rifles he says; "Sixteen Grains of #2400 is the Universal Load". From a completely different article he says; "The Load" is 13 Grains of Red Dot. Somewhere along the line the two articles got mixed up.
