Can any of you SASS shooters suggest a good bullet mold or bullet for my two new Ruger sass vaqueros and Taylor 1873 comanchero. Any load data would be much appreciated. I plan on practicing over the winter for next season matches.

Thanks

Light with fast powder at slow velocity. I have no specific recommendations as I havent shot SASS, but this seems to be the trend.

I recommend the Lee 358-125-RF as it comes in a 6 cavity mould (#90306). I suggest a softer alloy in the 10 - 12 BHN range and a good soft lube such as BAC or Lar's NRA 50/50 lube. Load the bullets over 3.5 gr VV N320 or 3.3 gr Bullseye in 38 SPL cases with a standard primer. Those are very competitive loads for SASS competition.

I cast a lot of 125 grain 358 RF with my automated master caster machine, the bullets are powder coated and shot in 38 Special for SASS shooting.

Magma Engineering mold is close to the Lee mold.

A pound of powder goes a long way since the load is very light. Just about any fast powder will work.

Have shot thousands of this bullet.

I have shot sass and just about any boolit in the 120 125 gr weight works well, preferably a round nose as they are easyer to load fast. 3 grs. Bullseye works great.

Magma makes a 122 grain RNFP mould that can be used in one of their machines or converted to use with handles like most of us do. I use it over 3.1 grains of Clays in the pistols and lever action.

Would tumble lube do the job, so I don't have to size/lube each one at a time.

My SASS load was 2.7 gr of Clays under a 125-130 bullet. Very soft load but accurate to 30 yards - 1.25" groups in the rifles.

The reality is that SASS is not a demanding sport and almost any load will get the job done

A lot of guys use the 105 gr bullet.

Many guys will give you a handful of bullets to try - just ask

Your mileage may vary, but my limited experience with tumble lubed boolits is they do not have enough lube to work in rifles well. Pistols maybe, but not rifles.

My SASS loads are designed to work in my pistols AND my rifle. All are the same caliber and shoot the same loads; it makes things simpler at the loading table.

To answer your question. "yes". I used it all the time in SASS.
I've never had any problems or leading shooting Tumble Lube in my Rossi rifles especially at the velocities I was shooting ( 700 + fps).
