Think I have tried most of the commercial cast 30 cal BB plain based blts, with at best marginal accracy even down around 1150-1200 fps with a number of powders. Most were ok at plinking cans, and practice off hand to 50 yd, but that was about the extent of it. Finally got a true plain base 308241 Ideal, sing cav, 154 gr. square / flat base via e-bay in the mail to day in the original box, and other than a bit of surface rust in the cav. do not believe it has ever had lead poured in it. It is a 3 groove Lovern style. Have data for this blt from old Lyman books, and look forward to trying it out for comparison to the bb blts. Seems to me that at vols in the 1200-1400 fps range the flat based 241's ought to run rings around the bev based cousins. Any how, am tickled to have the mold and have hopes of running accross one of the heavier 30 cal plain based at a gun show or on ebay etc. There was an awful lot of shooting done befor the advent of gas checks and commercial produced bb blts. Will be reporting on my results as soon as I find time to cast load and shoot some of the new/old mold blts. However, if there are any out there who have experiance with this blt, would appreciate your data and results. Plan to play with this w/30-30 and 308.:

I thank in advance to all who respond to this thread.

Those molds vary quite a bit in design, they've changed back and forth thru several cherries. Cast of WW or a little softer and sized 0.311", they work well in the 30-30 from 7 to 10.5 gr. of Unique,

Thanks Charger, Will probably start with a 7 or 8 grain load of Unique.

I have one of those moulds. Mine is marked 311241 and cast out of 3-1 WW-Type they weigh 154 grs+or -..

I use this in my Encore 30-30 rifle. Loaded with 13.5gr of Imr4227 and a large pistol primer it will stay around the 2 inch mark at 100 yds for 5 shots with 3 of the shot doing 1 inch or less, most of the time.......

I lube with a Lyman 450 with BAC in a.312 die and then sized in a Lee push through .309 die......

This is a fun load that has very low recoil and muzzle blast, easy on the gun and shooter.....Terry

"....commercial cast BB......" And there is the problem. Commercial cast is usually HARD and the bevel base has given me nothing but trouble. Melt those commercial jobs down and add an equal amount of straight WW by weight. Then you'll have a nice alloy.

I second Bret's advice. I recieved a box of Magna 9mm BB lead bullets from the wife for Christmas a couple of years ago that started leading my barrels with every regular load I had. Ended up melting them down and starting over with them. Had to do the same with some LaserCast stuff I bought about ten years ago.

Realloyed and recast and lubed with LAR's Carnauba Red and my pistols and rifles went back to the fine groups and minimal mess that I was used to.

Hey 1Shirt
I have used the 311241PB for many years, in several .30-30 rifles, and always have had good luck if the velocity is kept around 1600fps or below. My latest load is a little faster than 1600fps, but does good at about 1750fps in a Marlin 336RC with a ballard barrel (20", rebarreled with an older barrel.) Load I used:
14.2 - 2400
QWW, sized .3105 @ 152 grains.
WLR primer and 50-50 Javelina lube.
3 shots in 1/2" @ 50yds.
Rifle has 2 1/2X scope.

Good Luck, you will like the mould!
