Does a bear cr*p in the woods?

Seriously, if you brouse through the threads on this and a couple other main topic sub forums you'll see plenty of threads on shooting cast bullets through the .308W (assuming you meant the cartridge and not the caliber?). You can also use the "search" feature on this forum to find a bajillion threads and posts.

BTW; very seldom is "lead" shot as such in the .308W. Most often the bullets are cast of an alloy that contains mostly lead but we differentiate the alloy mixes because it makes a difference in the bullets performance. Most common alloys used contain lead, antimony and tin.

Welcome to the forum, much to learn here.

Yep, a lot of fellers cast for their .308, and I'd say it's almost as popular as casting for the 30-30 and 30-06...:D

I am thinking of using aluminum gas checks. How are they compared to copper?

I shoot 113, 170 and 200g .308 cast boolits through my .308. I shot bare based, powder coated and gas checked with both Hornady copper checks and Vulcan aluminum checks. Fit is king. When shooting at higher velocities, the gas checked bullets work better than the bare based bullets, but for "10g pistol powder loads", they are just fine for 50 yard plinking. The aluminum checks seem to work just as good as the copper ones although I've only gone through about 50 of them. I've pushed the 170g bullet up to nearly 2400 fps and got great accuracy. These were lubed with 2:1 Beeswax:Vaseline and gas checked.

for your normal every-day loads the aluminum ones are fine.
you do however need to pay attention to the thickness of the material used different sized checks use different thickness of material.
it has to do with the shank on the boolits diameter versus the final diameter of the die squeezing them into place.
so a .0010 thick check probably wouldn't be best on a .284 diameter booit shank on a 30-cal rifle boolit.
but one that was .0015-16 thick would squeeze into place on either a 310 or a 314 boolit with plenty of tension to stay there to the target.

Yes. Used an old single cavity Lee 309-160R with 20 grains of 2400 or 38 grains of H355.

Also loaded and fired a few batches with 210 grain 311299 with 33 grains of H335 or 18 grains of Unique.

These were loaded in LC 65 NM cases which had been neck reamed.

Noe's version of Don Eagan's MX-2 is deadly with 28 grs. of Varget in my production class 700 varmint rifle (.308)

Shoot the rcbs 165 silhouette , rcbs 200 silhouette, and the Saeco #315 in a Savage and Remington 308 both with bull barrels and can get around 1 inch groups at 100 yards. The two powders I have had the best luck with are RL-7 and Varget

my youngest son at 14 needed some range time with the rifle ahead of deer season. I use a plain based boolit with 10 grains of unique. For informal target practice with a 308 rifle, a light load like this cant be beat for a younger person to get acquainted with a rifle. The loads were printing a good 6 inch's below point of aim at 100 yards but the grouping is what I was interested in. He fired close to 100 rounds in a hour and half. He wouldn't been able to do that with the full power loads. They cost me less than 10 cents each too.

Cool. Reloaders have more choices.
