Where do you buy your tin - antimony - flux . I have run out of my 2 year stock pile . I think it was all from Ferguson in Arizona ? .

Thanks

Bill Ferguson, The Antimony Man, is still around & is still probably the best source for straight antimony. He also has other related metals & tools of the trade. He is a very knowledgeable metallurgist & a friendly fellow.

I get my tin from Ace hardware. I buy 95/5 lead free solder for $14/lb. That’s 95% tin & 5% antimony. I use 6” of 1/8” 95/5 per pound of lead to get my mix. When I need to bump up my antimony content, I work off a stash of antimonaly hard lead rod that I got off a job a year or so ago. You can get that stuff from McMaster-Carr. It’s convenient to use, but its not cheap.

For flux, I just use candle drippings that my wife throws away. I bought some Marvelux a year or two ago, but I ended up never even opening the can.

I buy my tin as 95/5 at Ferguson. Not Bill, but the plumbing supply house. 10 bucks a spool currently if you have an account. Flux is whatever lube I'm currently unhappy with.

I bought some Babbitt ( 83 % tin - 11% antimony - 6% copper ) .

4 lbs for $30 on the Big E . It seems the alloys have all gone through the roof .

I need more antimony as my molds cast well at low tin .

Being a "newbe" I need to ask this question. What is the "tin can" made from that I recycle every night after dinner? I did notice a magnet sticks to it.

I thought tin cans (like soup cans and such) are steel that is then coated with some chemical so the food doesn't taste funny. I think actual tin is too pricey to use.

I hear really old toothpaste tubes had tin inside them though.

You ought to give the Marvelux a try...doesn't smoke and burn. It just melts, turns dark gray and sizzles a little. I like it!

The "tin" can is steel, with a very thin coat of tin.

I don't like Marvelux, it made both my cast iron(Lyman Moldmaster and MoldmaserXX) pots rust. I've been using Armour Lard, bought in the supermarket, for the many years. Used to use bacon fat, but someone put a bug in my head, that there's salt in it.
