I dropped a few hundred Keith type Boolits sized to .430 from wheel weights. They are 265-270 grains. I wanted to load .44SPL for my S&W 4 inch 629. The only load data I could find was using Vihtavuori powder. But I have none and it is pricey. I have many other common powders. I tried using 10 grains HS6 but I got primers that were flatter than I like to see. Anybody have suggestions on a starting load and powder to consider? I won't hold you to it and will research suggestions. Thanks.

I would look at Unique, Bullseye, Red Dot, or pretty much any other powder including "shotgun powders" that is considered ok for low pressure rounds like .38 Spl, .45 ACP, etc. This is assuming you aren't trying to hot rod this and turn it into a .43 Mag, in which case I would look toward 2400 as it will get you into territory that is a heavy .44Spl and light .44 Mag, say around 1100ish fps.

Thanks, no I'm not trying to hotrod. I want to get @900 fps

Since yours is a 629, why not load the .44 mag case with 8 to 10g of Unique?

I'm with Shuz. Try some at 8 gr., some at 9 and some at 10, and make your selection on the basis of accuracy and recoil. That's worked really good for a buddy of mine when he was out of 2400. The deer couldn't tell the difference between these and a full load.

Agree, just makes life simpler. If you can not find data, use data for 300gr & work up. You can use starting 250gr data, just pay very close attention. If you only want 900fps, any of the med burners will do, including HS6.

Mainly because I have a lot more SPL brass than Magnum, but thanks. I will consider this.

I rechecked my data on HS6 from this Summer. I was using 11 to 13 grains and getting up to 1100fps with HS6

Much hotter than I wanted or remembered. I do have several pounds of Unique I was saving for some pet loads. I think I'll go that route in the Magnum cases. A good excuse to trade/buy more brass ;-)

8 grains of Unique or Universal puts you in 1,000 fps range. Backing either them off down to 7 grains should get you to 900 fps according to one of Brian Pierce's Hand Loader articles.

8.0 of power pistol in special cases 9-9.5 in magnum cases.
