So I've been wondering about cast boolits for my AR-15 - anybody do this? I see there's molds available, GC and PB, in different styles/weights. I'm assuming GC's would be best?

My AR is just a standard DPMS 16" carbine, don't know the twist rate but I'm sure it's nothing fancy, whatever's normal for a 16" carbine.

Any mold/boolit suggestions? Threads already about this topic? I have no luck searching here, always end up out in Google-land.

Lots of posts on here, you could spend days reading

Cast in 223 is not difficult --- I did it on first try in my ar with no leading

GC is required
you need to know your twist -- a 1/12 would be the best
1/9 harder to do
1/7 most difficult and the slowest velocity before you look at your target and call SHOTGUN groups

Read RPM threshold --- I have seen it happen in my rifles

A filler " Dacron " might be needed depending on load/ bullet combo

Don't expect Fast velocitys

Only Make a small test batch to prove it works befor you put all your eggs in one basket

I have a DPMS 3G2 that I shoot 55g Lee cast (not the Battor mold!) as well as a NOE .228" 72g. I powdercoat both and they get loaded with around 16g ? of Ramshot TAC. I pounded a test cast and measured my throat, thats why I went with the .228 mold.

The Lee mold is great for plinkers and shooting steel plates. i use the 72g NOE for accuracy, getting 1.5" or smaller groups at 100yds.

Heres my current load and group.

And another older test

That top group is great!

Several different chambers in AR's. 5.56mm NATO has a throat diameter of around .227". 223 SAMI is .225". Your twist rate should be stamped on the barrel in front of sight. Top or bottom.

Best I can tell, all of their 16" barrels are 1:9" twist.

Thats what my 16" DPMS is. Also a 5.56.

Use a Tight fitting patch, mark 12 o'clock on cleaning rod by handle, push in till one rotation of your mark, measure distance rod went in. 1 rotation in 9" is whats advertise and what I measured on mine.

Happy shooting.
