Let me preface this by pointing out small objects are hard to hit. I took this doe with a MiHec 454423 small hollow point in my 1911 Dan Wesson at 45 yards.

Now before you give me too hard of a time about shooting little ones... Here's the one I took 4 days earlier. Also my daughter got her first deer this fall. And my son took his first buck. This will surely go down as the greatest hunting season of my life! Praise be to God!

Good work! Thsee pictures perfectly model my frustration with Canadian firearms laws.

Pistols and AR's and not just in the safe or at the range.........sigh

Awesome all the way around.

And I thought *I* was the only person in the world who used blue masking tape to stop his AR magazine from rattling while hunting.

edit: What state was that MONSTER buck taken in? He's huge!

A great example of why modern sporting rifles are in demand ,there"s a GRIN factor when used !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the nice feedback. To answer a few questions. The alloy was just range scrap (mostly cast bullets - pretty hard). I don't know the speed, but it was sitting on 5.5 grains of Unique and a Winchester LP primer. The blue masking tape is actually to keep me from mixing up the 223 and 300 Blackout mags. The 300 BO has been deadly this fall. I really like this round. It is truly a tinkerer's delight (cast your own, make your own brass, build your own gun)! It's my only AR I cast for. But we hunted with Hornady SSTs (125 gr) over 17.3 gr of H110 and CCI 450s. The big buck was taken with a 6.5 Grendel in Kansas (123 gr SST and 28 gr of H335). He is my biggest buck by far. You want to know something really ridiculous? The kids and I only spent 3 days hunting total! None of this is typical. After my daughter got her doe in September, I figured anything else would be gravy. I like gravy!:bigsmyl2: I think I need to get a lottery ticket before the run of luck ends.
Rock chalk!

And for the lawyers, use any of the above loads at your own risk.

Outstanding those pics are priceless and the effective use of a good rifle and handgun make that protein just that much tastier. I love the AR platform my son hunts witha 6.8 that I built and it is his favorite and one his most accurate rifles. Me I love my 458 SOCOM it is a great platform. Great to be able to quickly and effectively adjust the rifle for fit on youth. No recoil to speak of and the cheek yield to the stock lends to accurate effective use. 1911........what more can you say. OUTSTANDING!

Great score(s) and pics! It has been a good year for you! It is great to get the kids out and enjoy this fine pasttime.
Yes, what part of Kansas do you hunt? The backround in your pics looks very much like the terrain where I hunt. It can be tough hunting but the animals are there!

The big one was taken in Lyon county in a CRP field. The other 3 were in NE Kansas on a over grown farmstead. In fact those 3 were all shot from an old barn that's nearly falling over.

As for kids, we need to expose as many as possible to the sport if we want it to stay viable. I just have the two kids. It's funny, my daughter is really the hard core hunter of the two. My son took his first deer at age 11 and never showed any more interest until this year. I wasn't going to push it on him. But when he said he wanted to go this fall, I said "Giddy up!" I think after yesterday morning (we doubled) I may have really lit the fire in him. My daughter wants to get another tag and take a doe, and then go squirrel hunting and then turkey. I know I'm biased, but I have been blessed with awesome kids!

As for the Modern Sporting Rifle... I have full blown AR fever! And they are a fantastic platform for multiple shooters of various sizes. Really great deer rifle for kids. Lightweight, low recoil options available and good ones are scary accurate. I'm not crazy about 223 for deer based on my own experiences. But there are some really good deer worthy cartridges in the ar15 platform these days (6x45, 300 BO, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 spc...etc.). Of course the right bullet is critical. I have become a BIG believer in the Hornady SSTs. I'm working on building my first AR pistol in 300 BO right now. I have no idea why I "need" it. But it should be fun!

Congrats to you and the kids. Surprising what a pistol can do at ranges you can use open sights. Got a running pig at range I thought I couldn't do, 165 gr TC light load 40SW, end to end pass through. Wanted to try the BO with 145 gr cast but alas, no pigs on the feeder. Friend that invited me said the yotes got the remains, he figures it was 150-160# - I have no idea. He saw deer (couple doe) at the feeder but the 300# pig chased them off, he couldn't get a shot - he really wanted that pig! Tried for 2 yotes @ 300+ with his 223, didn't have his ears on and muzzle was inside the box stand. Won't do that again. Been having too much fun with the BO, don't even have anymore ammo loaded for the 308. Still got to ingotize 70# of isocore before it gets too cold.

Nice pictures. I look up to you for starting your children, you will enjoy their company when you get older, they can drag deer better than old people.

OOPS! I gave a small piece of misinformation. I said the 45 boolit was a MiHec H&G 68. It was actually a MiHec 454423 w/small HP.
That is a significantly different boolit. I corrected my mistake in the OP, but wanted to point it out in case it was important to any one.

Thanks again for all the kind words!

I was actually wondering how you HP'ed a 68.

I didn't ask though because I was distracted by that MONSTER of a buck. What did it score, anyway?

edit: And how old was it? Looks ancient.

Really love the 454423. That is one sexy boolit! It's especially cool in a 1911. I still can't believe how well it will feed.
Buck was 163 and change. Don't know about his age.

Congrats to you and your kids!

I was not an AR fan until my department issued me one for patrol use. After getting trained on how to use it, I'm a fan although not a rabid one. They have amazing flexibility for cartridge choice which is it's biggest asset IMO.

Very nicely done on several accounts, you and those youngsters are indeed truly blessed. A word of warning; this won't be your last CB kill. By now I'll bet an oatmeal raisin cookie you're already looking forward to your next CB kill. It gets worse, only J-words along on my last hunt were in my "social equipment" carry 45.

Nicely done!

I love my ARs for hunting. I grab my 6.8s when it's anything larger than pdogs. 300 blackout pistols are fun, that's what I went with when I built pistol.
