New tower we raised yesterday to replace one I lost 2 years ago in an ice storm, by the time I get the antennas on it you are looking at $4k++

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd248/maryalanab/IMG_20151203_1543171631_zpsh2bamwnv.jpg

Since the boom truck was here and I had salvaged 3 sections of the old tower I put it back up with 2 new antennas for 6 meters and 70cm ham bands, and a new rotor because the old one cracked in half when it hit the ground

I truly envy you who can enjoy English tobacco in well loved briar. I know no other indulgence (other than the love of a fine women) that can best your past time. I've found only one other that even comes close to the sensory satisfaction, Thai cuisine. I miss this so much I refuse to sell my pipes, preferring to defer the possibility for re-igniting the love at some later date.

I now grow and make wine instead.

It is interesting - I do not have a TV nor VCR or anything. You would be surprised how much you can get done when you don't waste time watching TV. Too bad making a living gets in the way of all this fun.

I guess I have two other hobbies . . .

First one is playing fiddle. I had a major heart attack at 43 and triple by-pass. I'd always wanted to play fiddle so during my recovery, I started taking some lessons - not "violin" but "fiddle". :-) That lead to going to WV to a workshop on old time music at the Elkins-Davis College a number of years ago . . . had the opportunity to meet and get some help from Melvin Wine (who is now deceases). Melvin is the only fiddler written up in WV history books (school). A fine gentleman who helped me out on a lot of things in regards to playing. I play "by ear" and so did he. At one time, I collected and repaired old fiddles - had about 50 or so but have since narrowed that number down to just a couple of special ones. I just love the "old time" music and especially love playing in "cross tune" - normal tuning is G D A E - in cross tuning - ou tune the A E to G D so it is tuned in G D G D and you are playing one two strings at a tie most of the time.

Second hobby is leather working. I did some in college many years ago and started again when in AZ during the winter. Enjoy making gun leather but now just limit it to projects for myself. Too many neighbors and friends wanting work done that it no longer was a "hobby" and more like a "job". LOL

And for you pipe smokers . . . . when I was younger, I smoked a pipe . . . and greatly enjoyed it! I gave up smoking many years ago and probably for the better . . . but boy do I miss the smell of a pipe stoked up with good tobacco! I had a number of nice briar pipes but my favorite was just a good old corncob pipe that you used to be able to buy - I believe they were called "Kentucky Meerschaum" so some such thing and sold for about 69 cents or so and had a plastic stem you could put a filter in. Just thinking about it still gives me the urge . . .

Keeping a 1968 Chevelle Malibu running. It's a daily driver and old cars driven daily always need attending to.
It's in the body shop now getting some rust and a dent fixed and then a custom paint job....fathom blue with a rainbow metal flake.
Going old school....whens the last time you saw a metal flaked paint job on a car that wasn't at a car show. It will turn a few heads for sure.
Ditched the mufflers and now running straight pipes, it sounds great and with the metal flake paint it will look great.

All of the above but to no great degree. My back and bad hip have really put a damper on things in the last year or so but I hope I am not done yet. I did a lot of whitewater in an open canoe for years but not lately. Fishing, hunting, woodworking, yard work, gardening. Used to hike some. Just about anything. Oh, some leatherwork too. Getting old really slows you down... I guess you have to say I am multy talented. I have played a fife in a fife and drum group and re-enacted in Civil War groups for 20 years and have played in some great places. I have dabbled with the violin some but haven't gotten really going with it. So little time... so much to do. I never could spell very well though for some reason..LOL.

Tell us more please. I love good coffee.
I bought all of my equipment from Burman Coffee Traders but there are others. I do not sell coffee, nor am I a distributor of equipment or an employee of any coffee company...

You can order beans from places you never thought of. Green beans will keep almost indefinitely, so order as much as you like, or start small with a sampler.

Prices range from comparable to store-bought to too-rich-for-my-blood, so I tend to buy the cheaper varieties. The upside is you really can brew the best, freshest coffee you have ever had, for a fraction of the cost of the most expensive coffee you've ever thought of drinking.

You get to roast it as dark or as light as you want, grind it fine or coarse, go full espresso if you're into that. The flavors will surprise you. This is not 'specialty holiday spiced' garbage, it just has a nice robust, real coffee taste.

A couple of years ago I roasted and ground five pounds of Ethiopian and sent one pound bags out as christmas gifts. Everyone loved it! Two friends of mine claimed it relieved migraines (I'm not making that up). When I mailed the packages the post office clerk liked the smell so much he asked if it really tasted that good. I told him, "If you're a fan of Starbucks you'll like it as much as theirs (and it cost about 75% less!), If you're not a fan of Starbucks you'll say it's way better than theirs."

I think my initial start-up cost was less than $200 and I never once regretted it.

Haven't done much lately due to weather and other hobbies/projects but rock and ice climbing.

The most encompassing passion lately has been having a custom home built. My boys helped me clear the 1/2 acre lot, and even with the builder done there's a 1200 sq ft basement to finish and the yard to landscape. It's got incredible views though

I like to hunt, used to shoot hand guns competitively. Not much time for either. Starting a business a couple of years ago I get almost no free time. I get a couple of months in the winter when business is slower but spend that time getting ready for the busy season. Like my Dad always says, earning a living is a b#@ch.

Between work, hunting, shooting, casting, reloading, building a rifle on occasion, keeping my horses rode and watching my bees I don't have time for a hobby!

Not all sushi contains raw fish and sushi isn't that hard to make. That said, master sushi chef's have been training for years and just making perfect sushi-mesi (sushi rice) is an art in itself let alone forming makizushi or nigirzushi.

The safety of raw fish can take this thread completely into the weeds, so lets just leave that to people to make their own decisions about.

To those who have never had a top grade steak prepared rare, seared tuna or some top grade sushi and sashimi, you are missing out on some of the finest cuisine to be had.

After shooting I reload. Before reloading I cast. I used to fish but the game warden said that I couldn't fish with a .44 mag for tackle. So I guess its back to shooting, casting and reloading.

I too am into roasting my own coffee! Its like coffee is supposed to taste! I got an old popcorn popper and roast in there. Just roasted up a fresh batch of Brazilian Mogiana on Tuesday. It is some awesome stuff!! I also absolutely LOVE fishing. Fishing of anykind, but top of the list is chasing trout with ultra-light tackle and a spinner!

Recreational Earthmoving and finding the limits of a 3 1/2 ton Cat track loader.

and general Yellow Iron Fever

I have a Kenwood transceiver, 600w amp, and a Hot Stick antenna. Casting and loading is going pretty good and now that I've given up looking for 2400 and switched to Accurate #9 I should have time for a Ham License. :-)

Fresh roasted coffee is great stuff! I had a small home roaster but it went t/u and hence I have several pounds of green beans that still need roasting. I never got enough heat from a hot air popper and while one can roast with a cast iron skillet and care it really stinks up the house. I thought about getting a small drum roaster but those are serious money.

To me the most relaxing fishing is out of a canoe on a small lake with u/l rod and spoons.

Metalworking and woodworking. I repair and reproduce antique furniture, scientific instruments, clocks, and just about anything olde!

(very early field microscope in case)

All are 100% authentic and working. I have made over 75 instruments, 32 microscopes, 26 clocks, 25 balance scales, and various items and furniture from the 18th and 19th century.

I chemically age and patinate the woods and metals to show wear from 100-200 years of use.

Having full metal and wood shops really helps....stocked with lathes, mills, shapers, grinders, saws, thickness planers, and every hand tool you can imagine......really help me to relax....and forget the PITA's that come up from owing your own engineering firm.

I too had a problem with my hot air popper until I took out the thermostat! Now it roasts a batch in 10-13 minutes.

I have too many. Had to give up sailing after Katrina trashed the boat and I had to move away from sailing waters to keep my job. I dabble in astronomy (4 scopes - 80mmED, 6" Cave Astrola, 10" Schmidt Cassegrain and a 12" Dob) , play a few musical instruments including my latest venture, the Steel Drum. I love tropical rock music. There's also hunting, competition shooting and radio controlled airplanes. Oh, and this site! Not much spare time any more but I have fun.

Get on ebay and look for a West Bend Poppery. NOT a Poppery 2. There's lot's of info about them on the net. They run at 1500W and will roast about a cup at a time in 6 or 7 minutes after the first batch which is to fast for good coffee, really. First cup of green beans at 11 to 12 minutes and then at 6 or 7 is ok. Makes enough for a week. I have 2 and alternate for roasting.

The Poppery 2 is just fine, slower roasting, but only handles about 3/8 a cup at a time. I use mine during the summer months when ambient temps will let it run up to temps needed for second crack. Winters no go.

Hot rods, guns, boats and beer! Hot rods leads too building, driving and fixing. Guns lead to casting, reloading, shooting and hunting. Boats (oh MY), leads to houseboat, fishing boat, ski boat, kayak, fishing, etc, etc. Beer leads to brewing, drinking and sharing good beer. Now we have added a 5th wheel which has lead to about 5 months a year traveling.

Paul, making sushi safely and correctly is NOT dabbling!

Side note: sushi refers to the rice and style of presentation and it doesn't always have raw fish. I dabble as well. Dang, those are nicely done rolls. I can turn them out reasonably well but I struggle with doing so consistently. There's a sushi place close to my house that offers classes and I'm thinking of taking one just to work on my technique.

My big thing when I'm in the kitchen though is baking - mostly breads but I'm starting to get into pastries.

I've got a Harley I like to ride when it's warm and wrench on when it's cold (time and finance permitting which is not often enough).

In addition to hunting I like camping as well. So far it's been all car camping but come spring I'm going to branch out into backpacking. I need to learn more about navigation before then as I get lost easily.

3rd hobby ... '60's Ford Mustangs, in particular a '68 California Special "S" code 390 / 4 speed and a '65 Fastback 289 / 5 speed (which is still in the body shop waiting for paint).

2nd hobby ... shooting, casting, and reloading.

1st (and my most important) hobby ... keeping the better half happy even though I spend far too much time and money on hobbies #2 and #3!

I am not bored with life.

I cook in Dutch Ovens and attend local, regional and national DOGs (Dutch Oven Gatherings), teach and promote use of the good black pots.

I restore and operate large cast iron flywheel engines best when running a mill, pump, ice cream freezer or something. I have hit and miss and throttle governed engines from 3/4 to 6 hp and from 1903-1936. Working on a Sears Farm Master built by Cushman currently.

I restore, operate and tractor pull in Farm Stock tractor pulls with Antique and Classic farm tractors. Currently rebuilding a 1938 John Deere H (10 whole hp) with oldest grandson. Gots lots of Minneapolis Molines including a Unitractor, but am color blind and have reds and greens and orange ones.

I have complete metal fab shop with most welding processes and tools. I like to take someones cast off stuff and make useful stuff out of it. I also have small machine shop that I go to when it is too hot to work in big shops.

I have a blacksmith shop and a smaller traveling shop that I use to do demonstration blacksmithing on. Getting too old and sorry to do as much, but used the forge last month to heat a head up while I welded up some cracks.

I also have a cabinet shop with most woodworking machinery.

I have done leather work for 50 years.

Wife lady and I have a RV and travel quite a bit.

I live on a lake, so can fish anytime. I go to the farm and can play with modern equipment. I help friends and neighbors with heavy dirt excavation and finish work.

I guess I need to find something to do to keep out of the poolhall--if I just knew how to schedule anything new.
