View Full Version : Anyone shoot a bullet like this?

I'm wanting to buy a mean 45 mold with a monster meplat. I found this 320gr bullet from accurate molds and want to know what you guys think. It'll be shot from my SRH at ~1200fps.

Anyone have any experience with a freight train like this? I'd like this to be my go to bullet for everything.

I tinkered quite a bit with big-bore/heavy boolit loads back in my IHMSA days and, to be quite honest, that full-wadcutter design doesn't appear too terribly promising. Sectional density wouldn't be all that bad for close-range penetration and you could expect reasonably decent expansion with a relatively soft alloy but ballistic coefficient would be almost a negative number so, I'd guess without actually crunching the numbers, anything out past 50 yards would be a real crapshoot. From my experience, for an 'all-around' boolit, you'd be a lot better off with a simple truncated cone in the 300-310 gr. range...'specially in a 'plain-base' boolit design. Just my nickle's worth.

I'd go with the 325B or 325C. This is just my opinion, but that bullet's liable to wobble & with those sharp edges, may have a cookie cutter effect, plus everything Kraschenbirn said.

For close range like 25 yards or less it would be a real killer on anything that breathes.

I don't go in for that much weight but I do use that particular format in 32 S&W Long, .32 H&R, 38 Special and 44 Magnum. I bought all the molds from Tom at Accurate. For me they are for "up close and personal". At 25 yards they seem to start opening the group a bit. In the 10-18 yard distance, pretty tight.

Geez oh Pete guys. I never would have thought about a loss in stability.

I understand the velocity will probably be down to 700fps at 100yds, but at that weight I'm sure it will still wallop.

Guess I'm going to have to research how bullet design affects stability...

My best bullet in the 454 Casull is an LBT LFN GC at 320 grains. Tom at Accurate Molds can easily duplicate it. I keep the muzzle velocity down to 1400 fps just for my comfort, but it can be pushed harder. It is a very effective bullet at 100 yards.

One of the reasons for a Semi-wadcutter design is it has much the same performance on the target as a full wadcutter, but remains stable at much longer ranges. For a bullet with that shape I would not consider "mushrooming" to be of any importance, and just use my "mystery metal" alloy @ about 12-14 BHN...

BTW; one of my "house guns" uses 150 gr. DEWC over a near max. load of W231. From my "tests" in wet phone books and water jugs, it is fairly devastating at "house" ranges, but falls off after 25 yards...

For a demonstration of how full wadcutters lose stabity, try this. Throw a #10 can football style as far as you can, then do the same with a football. The football should not only land further away, but it will get there without tumbling end over end.

The two best 45 caliber bullets I've ever used are the RCBS 45-270-SAA and the Mihec 45-308 that recently reran here: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?197747-MiHec-454-308-Keith-two-or-four-cavity-HP-or-solid.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not interested in any "mushrooming", just want a stable bullet at least 300gr with a large meplat.

I've contemplated the Lee a lot recently. I just need to order it already.

at that weight I'm sure it will still wallop.

At that muzzle velocity it will pack quite a wallop in the grip, too...

Right now I'm using a 300gr hornady xtp over a healthy charge of h110. These read about 1640 from my 5".

Trust me when I say that a 300gr @ 1200 is an upgrade.

I can pretty much guarantee you that past 50 yards that bullet won't hit where you point it.

I tried a .45 bullet with an 80% meplat and couldn't group them well at 50 yards; I tried a 75%, I think, and couldn't group them well at 100.

If I were making one bullet for everything for the .45 Colt, or hotter, it would be between 260 and 290 grains and have a .30" to .32" nose, at most.

 Those have to hurt!

They wake you up for sure. The nice squishy hogue grips help a little, but you can definitely tell it's not a boy's gun.

However, its overkill for Indiana whitetails.

I certainly hope that 1640 is a mistype.

I'm guessing he has a Casull, not a .45LC.

True story. I can go even hotter than that in my Toklat, but it already hurts enough.
