Has anyone used the Lee .459 405grain Hollow Base on game from a muzzleloader? If so, how was the performance?

I am expecting it to be very good, 405 grains at 1000+ FPS for 900-100 ft/lbs should be good. Just curious about actual results vs ft lbs on paper.

You do realize this is not a minie bullet, the base is not designed to expand. The skirt is much thicker than that of a minie. It was designed by the US army Ordnance department with a hollow base to keep the weight to length ratio within specification for best accuracy in a model 1873 Springfield trapdoor rifle.

What are you going to shoot it in?

Yes sir, I do realize it is not a minie. I was however unaware of the history of the bullet development. Thanks for the insight.

I plan to cast then size this bullet, paper patch it and shoot it from a 1:28 .45 muzzle loader barrel.

Was hoping for first person experience using this bullet on game.

Ok, just didn't want you think it would acting like a minie. I can't offer any hunting experience, but look forward to hearing how it works. Good luck with it.

bullets will bump up with in 11 inches of the breech with real black powder, close to it with others. one doesnt need a mine ball deep base to bump up a bullet. thats why paperpatching works so good.

Hoping to see comments on using this boolit myself. Have considered trying it in my .458 bore 24" twist TC New Englander.
But, there are others in the fun-a-torium like RCBS 45-405, Lyman 457124 and there's paper patching .45 pistol molds so I just haven't found my round to it yet.

If loading it without a card, will putting lube in the small base cavity work for a lube cookie?
