Since I am just starting casting (actually did do some in the early 70s) I am looking for a little guidance from those in the know. I am looking for a heavy bullet that I can use in a 458 win mag (to be converted to a Lott) I have a lee 450 gr. and have ordered their 500gr but would like a 550-600gr also. Suggestions. How hard is it to ream out a 500 grain to get in the 550 area or would that throw off the stability of the bullet design?
Any group buys going on or planned for a heavy 458? I was looking at a bullet called a Crater 2, which seemed to have good ballistics and sure seemed to work well on buffalo from what was printed.
Would also like to do paper patching so any suggestions on a heavy that takes well to paper would be appreciated also.:coffee:

I have the Lee 450 PB , does great in the Lott , with WM cases .. 53-54 grains of H335 ..

I am fixing to load some 462560's which are around 540 grains with GC's in the Lott cases ..

Have some 410 grain PP's I got from another member here , havent tried them yet ..

Have a mold that will throw around 570 in WW , will be interesting to see ..

There is a 462560 mold for sale on e-bay, but be prepared to spend at least $125.00 for one of these "hen's teeth". The last one sold for over $150.00, single cavity.

The Lyman 462560 is a good bullet in 458's. Maybe better is a Mountain Mold custom design so you get what you want with quality and a mold that will last a long time. Use Gator Checks only, the 458 size will stay on the bullet shot into sandstone and sand. We can't tell about game, the bullets all exit(510 grain gas check at 1970 fps).

I have been shooting the 500 sp Lee at reduced velocity with good results, Also the 500 rnfp with gc. The sp started to strip and loose accuracy at about 1850-1900 fps but the gc stays good at 2100 fps. They are cast of ww with 1% tin and water dropped. My Lott is a #1 and has proven to be very accurate. The lee 405 rnfp does well also. I have a new mold and have cast for it but havn't got to shoot yet. A lyman 157658D it is a very pointed thing that drops at 500 gr with lube, Hope to try it soon. James:-D

The Crater II you were looking at, from JB Young, is similar to the Lyman 462560 that was mentioned. It differs in it has a short front driving band on it. JB still offers the original Crater which has a shorter BR nose that would function in a levergun. Both bullets weigh 550 grains. I'm pretty sure that the molds were made by BallistiCast and you can find them on their site. Most 458 Win & Lott's have a very healthy throat, so you'll need a long nosed boolit to fill it.

+1 on Mountain molds. You could save big on any of these designs by simply copying the design in MMs boolit designer.

Dogg: e-Bay # 170 206 152 008 may be of interest..a notch heavier than you indicate, but that could help should you have a need to shoot through a Peterbilt lengthwise...Onceabull

Been watching that 645 gr. onceabull but have a feeling it is going to get real expensive before it ends. Would be interested in a lyman462560 which sounds like a good boolit. Is anybody planning a group buy on one of these heavy .458, have to keep cost as low as possible to not agravate the wife! I would like to thank everyone who has responded for your input, I am hopefully learning and it is always good to learn from those who have experience. thanks

Theres a thread here where we are signing up for a 462560 IF LYman will resurrect it

The Lyman 462560 works well in my limited testing.

It still does not quite equal the RCBS 500gr RNFPGC (actually casts about 525 from wheel weights).

The RCBS bullet will shoot well over nearly any powder and at nearly any reasonable velocity (1200-1900 anyway).
