View Full Version : What's your favorite gun to cast boolits for.

I'm still a bit of newbie, I have cast about 4000 boolits but all the same mold, a 200 swc h&g 68 style. I'm curious what your favorite gun is to cast for. All mine have been target boolits for NRA bullseye through my les Baer concept 3.

My favorite handgun to cast for, if I only had to choose only one it is my S&W 25-2 in 45 Colt. A close second is my other 25-2 in 45ACP. I prefer to cast for revolvers as they will digest nearly any shape or nose. With semi's one has to pay attention to feeding issues and over-all length.

Finn model 27 made in 1935, swapped a cherry #4MKI* for it. Guy told me it did pierce primers, so used a screwdriver to back the firing pin towards the cocking piece. Only paid $125 for the enfield so I think I did good. Rifle was in excellent shape with a beautiful shiny bore. Frank

I've been thinking about this question for the last half hour, and have concluded that I don't have a favorite gun.
All of my guns are useful. All my guns serve a purpose. A few have multiple applications and can be used very effectively in different situations.
But, what is exactly a "favorite gun." Is it the one you use the most or the one you have a special attachment to? Is it the gun that brings back memories of a good hunt or an exceptional shot or owned by someone special? I don't know. All I know is, all of my guns are useful.

I can remember a time when I wouldn't dare put a lead bullet through a couple of my guns, now I wouldn't dare put a jacketed bullet through my guns. Funny how things change.
I've got a box of 500 smk's and was wondering just the other day what I was going to shoot them in, to busy shooting lead to shoot them.

Hmmmm....favorite? It's hard to say. I cast a lot of calibers, and perhaps a better question would be which one is my favorite to shoot? Casting is fun, but I do it to shoot!

That said, I don't think I could answer my own question, either ;)

All of them, but I have 2 which have rewarded me for my patience.

Lee .430 310 gr gas checked and
Lee .358 158 gr round nose, tumble lubed.

The .430 gave me my first true cloverleaf while sighting in the scope.

The .358 gave me this.
148043

3 shots went through that hole at 50 yards. The black stick on bulls-eye is 2" for scale.
Was about 5 grains of Red Dot under those bullets.

Targets like that will really make you appreciate some molds.

I like the Lee 175gr TC for the 40 S&W used Glocks (22 and 35). I can make a ton of them fast and they just drop from the mold. Plus they are easy to handle in the lubesizer.

I Lee 200SWC is a close second as it is very accurate in my Glock21SF.

The Lee 120Gr TC for 9mm is pretty good also as I can make a ton of them fast and not use so much lead. Great for my Glock19 and my conversion barrels in the Glock 22 and 35.

.45 Colt by far, that is the handgun I cut my teeth on back when I was about 15. The guy up the street was a hand loader he handed me a box of reloads and his
Blackhawk and said, Have fun & don't loose my brass. Then we went back to his house and he started teaching me about reloading and then onto casting and the
rest they say is an ongoing addiction.
When I got to gun buying age I found a Blackhawk of my own.

Hmmmm . . . that's kind of a hard question! I like casting for every gun I have.

Probably my favorite is the Lyman/Ideal 358-311 RN - a good "traditional" boolit for using in all of my 38s - bot DA and SA. They work great out of my 5" S & W M & P - bade the same year I was born (1952) but they work well out of all of my vintage revolvers (last count about 8 or 9 of them - Colt, S & W, Uberti, Ruger)

I have a 7 1/2" Uberti blued steel Cattleman on the way in 45 Colt. This week I was casting Lyman/Ideal 454-190 boolits for it and I have to admit, I like seeing those drop. Can't help but think about the history of the 45 Colt and the 1873 SAA when doing casting them - they'll be used over smokeless and BP.

Whether they be round balls, minie balls, conicals, WC or SWC . . what the heck . . . they are all fun! Every gun I own has its own appeal (or I wouldn't have them) and usually it's because the gun has a historical significance or the cartridge does.

Purely for economic reasons because ammo for this bottleneck WWII Jap 8mm Type 14 Nambu G.I. bringback is too pricey for me to afford. I even go to the trouble to reform 357 SIG brass to keep shooting this oddball. It's about on par with the 380ACP powerwise so cast boolits are ideal for plinking.

Ballard 25-20 Win.
I have a Doc Brewer 2 cavity mold that gives very few rejects. Two different bullets in that mould and both weigh around 105 grains. A pot full of lead lasts a long time and at 6 grains of AA#7 per shot a pound of powder lasts a long time and with that combination very little recoil.

I like casting for all of my firearms from 30 cal and up. I'm particularly fond of the 30 and 31 calibre military rifles as they usually shoot very well with cast boolits and I get quite a few boolits from every pot of lead in comparison to larger calibres like my Trapdoor 45/70s. The sights with their extreme elevation capabilities also aid in zeroing cast boolits well for ranges from 50 yards to close to a kilometer. With boolits of 200 grains and heavier at between 1800 and 2100 fps, shooting at long ranges is easily doable and quite a bit of fun.

I have a couple of molds I look forward to casting with and a couple I have to pay super close attention to that just flat wear me out to use that I really enjoy shooting through their respective rifles.
I have an rcbs 240gr gas check mold that pours boolits through it at almost room temperature, and a nei 4 cavity that'll rain boolits as fast as you can open and close it, and the rcbs 30-150 fngc that is a joy to cast with and shoot, I can loaf along with that 2 cavity mold for hours and just pile them up without a care in the world.

the accurate 2 cavity 165gr mold I push along in the 30 cals is one that I have to control the temp on and pay strict attention to timing and fill rate otherwise it throws boolits outside it's one grain window.
they are a joy to shoot at the range and the attention to detail pays off in speed and accuracy on target.
the other one I wear myself out with is the rcbs 22-055s mold I slightly modified it has to be poured in a narrow temp window and I have to pay attention to the alloy temp also.
if I do I can weigh the difference between the 2 cavity's and will overlap the middle weight group enough to get a large sample of same weight boolits.
it pays off when I'm shooting little groups at 2800 fps in the various 22 cal rifles.

Sorry pistol shooters - I am a revolver fan from waaaaaaaaaaaay back.
I have 2 favorites: 1) 1956 mfg'd 5 screw pre-29 6 1/2". 44 mag w/ 8 gr of 231 and RCBS 240 swc 2) 1958 mfg'd Colt officer's match 38 w/ H&G 51 160 gr swc w/ 4 gr 231.
Yesterday, I was shooting iron sights with the 44 @ 200 yards at an 18" gong and actually hit it a few times. Missed mostly but they were reasonably close - enough to keep someone's head down if I had to.
The Officer's Model will punch the center out of a target at 25 yards from a sandbag rest.
Terrific shooters - both of them.

I have to cop out and say all also but maybe the flavor of the month since early this year has to be the 500 Smith&Wesson. Factory ammo is just stupid expensive and most of it is not very fun to shoot.

Casting for these beasts (we have 3) is allowing us to fully enjoy these fine pieces of machinery. Launching a 440gr grain boolit at about 1100f/s then watching it turn a water filled milk jug inside out at 100 yards is a hoot !!!

I've shot a lot of jugs with high power rifle in my life it's just the way that big slow 440gr does it is kinda amazing. It's freight train like. :)

I think its more alone the line of which gun is my favorite gun to cast for by which mold is my latest favorite. What I mean is this, I got a Lyman 358156 HP/GC this year, and after the first trip to the range my 357's are all getting a workout due to this and so for now my favorite is 357Mag/38Spec. Hard to pick a favorite. How about my top 3?

- 1911 in 45 acp: They seem to love cast boolits
-AR15 in 300 Blackout: It's nice to have an AR that likes cast. Not that mines a tack driver: it averages a bit under 2 MOA with cast.
-LCP: I love being able to shoot 95 grains of lead and 2.5 grains of Bullseye. You can make your lead and a can of powder go a long way. And they are pleasant and reasonable accurate to shoot

Eddie2002
10-11-2015, 11:35 AM
Most fun would be my 7.7 Jap with 100 grain cast over 5.5 grains of Bullseye, not as accurate as my Remington 30-06 at 50 yds with the same load but still a fun gun to shoot. Still trying to get on paper with my 90/31 Mosin.
Been shooting my .380 LCP with some 115 grain cast boolits I picked up at a show. They are fun plinkers over 2.4 grains of Greendot with not much recoil. Makes the LCP fun to shoot.

I haven't cast in a while due to health problems. But when I was able to shoot IPSC I loved casting the 45 acp military profile 230 grain. It's a 6 cavity H&G OLD (Stamped San Diego) mold. I would set the molds across the top of the Lee 4" production pot to heat up. When the lead got to casting temp, I started casting, and the pot never cut the heating element off again until I stopped. Man !!! That mold can flat out eat the lead. It was / will be fun to use (again).

I almost hate to cast single cavity molds. But you do what you have to do.

Can't argue with that. I have a few moulds that are a bit difficult and a few rifles that are difficult as well. I guess my least favorite project is a safe queen 375 Winchester; Lyman mould performed flawlessly, receiver sight was quickly regulated and the first load performed as well as I can shoot a peep-sighted levergun. Was actually a bit of a disappointment. Still a pretty awesome rifle but I think it will be retired sometime this year.
I like a challenge now and then, those often turn into my most rewarding projects.

I love casting for my Marlin 1895 in 45/70. It loves the 405 gr boolits coming out of my Lee mold... the cost saving is just amazing and they look really good when loaded...

Gotta agree with Big T on this, only my mould is the RCBS.

Size matters. Bigger is better. .500 down to .400 and anything in between.
