I've found myself growing very addicted to the combo of my 4 inch, slicked, chamfered night sighted and accurate GP 100 and the old Keith loaded in 38 special cases to 1085: for IPSC, for carry and for general use. Inside of 50 yards, the combo *should* work better than a 45 acp 230 with a .300 meplat . I know how well flat nosed 45 bullets ( the lee 230 tc, the mountain mold 245 truncated cone with a .360 meplat, the RCBS 255 keith and the lee 300 gc) kill game up to large hogs at even "hardball" velocities, BUT no real world experience with the 358429. I had to humanely euthanize a 350 plus hog the other day, but balked at using the 170 grain bullet and used the Keith 255 ( 265 actual) at 1250 fps from my redhawk. I KNEW that would be quick...
The plus side for me for the keith 38 I can get more bullets per lbs, the shot recovery time is faster for IPSC even over my 625 JM and 230's at 835 fps, the 4 inch GP100 is also night sighted ( 'yotes love my chickens, especially at night) and packs very easily all day and night in a mernickle ps6da. If it will work well on coyotes, occasional hogs I stumble across and work well as a stopper ( given COM hits) for self defense, this might be the perfect south central texas packin' pistol and load for me...
Does anyone have any real world experience with that combo on deer size game inside of 50 yards? This is not intended to be a hunting round ( ruger only 45 or the 454 for big game hunting), but a compromise round balancing expense, power, shot recovery and cost that meets all needs should they be required... besides that little GP 100 is so easy to carry and shoot!
