The bigger the hole the quicker the boat sinks !

In the lower velocity stuff weight is .... Umm nice ,yeah the 50 can shoot faster but for pure thump that ol'54 best the 50 ,I like them both and the 50 is easier to find components in a store for ( in fairness I have 3 54's and am down to one 50 )

As far as Renegades go, I have both too. Three 50's and only one 54 (down to just one right now). Its true the 50 is easier to find stuff and the 54 is certainly a bigger hole. If your here...I assume you cast or at least are interested in casting...so it wouldn't really matter too much finding components. Honestly, I like them both. For me, the 54 would be the last one to go, mostly because it was the first and only Renegade I purchased brand new.

Three 54's, one 50 here as well. Bigger is better.

a 54 will do everything a 50 will do but, a 50 won't quite do all a 54 will. anything you shoot won't be able to tell you which it was shot with. my opinion & yer welcome to it.

There is a difference, not huge but this question always comes up. 50/ 54, 54/ 58, 32/36 and so on. If you tell us why you are asking, maybe we could help more.

Well my name is Sam and I am a RenegadeAholic! I own 6 right now, with several custom barrels. I hunted with a .50 for years, no issues, killed a lot of deer, using Hornady Great Plain bullet, 385HP, but some ran a few yards as they are prone to do. Then I got a like new .54 Hawken barrel in a trade, Man did that thing kill game! I used the 425 Hornady GP slug, with 105 grains of 2ffg, where it shot good, last deer I shot was 165 yards, quartering away, behind the left shoulder, thru the right one, an flipped on its head. I don't remember ever having a deer shot with .54 maxi hunter type slug, take over one or two steps, most went 26 inches or so, straight down. If you get a .54, shop around, and get a good mold for slugs or roundballs, make your own patches too. One thing I did on all my TC Hawkens and Renegades, was glass bed them. Every one of them shot better, easy to do. The wood stocks continue to shrink as they dry with age, get a little play in the barrel. Just went and looked thru my log book, I have taken 47 deer with Renegades, .50 and .54, more with the .54, they are bad to the bone!

As far as much difference between the 50-&-54. Knowing what I do know now. 50 cal. has plenty of power to drop just about any game animal in the lower 48 with a single shot. Providing its shooter does his job behind its sights. But than again that applies to any firearms accuracy does it not?

Bubba .50 pretty much nailed it. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the Renegade has a 1" barrel, which will make the rifle heavier in .50, if that's consideration.

in my experience with TC rifles, the .54 always seemed to be a little more accurate.

Renegades rock.
The flinter bored out to .58 might be the fave.

Took a Renegade .50 and had it bored out to .60 rifled (Bob Hoyt). Outstanding. With that receiver, I found a .54 Green Mt Barrel with a slow twist and it is pure magic with a round ball (it's really long). Used to have a Renegade .50 but the itch to make something different bit me. The .50 was incredibly accurate, but now it's that .60 round baller. I'd really like to find another T/C .50 barrel with 1" across the flats and have Bob Hoyt make it a .54 round baller. Getting the correct twist for the boolit you prefer to use makes a world of difference. I guess I'm a .54 fan.

I have been shooting muzzleloaders for 20+ years, taken 40 whitetails(an elk), mostly at closer ranges, but not always. A .50 is plenty, round balls, ball-ets, REALS, or big conicals, if the shooter does his part? Stick with holy black, don't over charge, (rb with 70 grains bp)know your drop, and practice. Just bought a 45 for the gkids to shoot later this year. Flyer
