I've got a h&r reproduction trapdoor I want to reload for with unique. The lyman 49th book shows a load in the tc gun section but it doesn't show pressures so I'm not sure about it. Does anyone have published data with pressures for 45-70 with 300 lfp bullet. Thanks billy

Billy, Frank Marshall jr. of the Cast Bullet Association recommended 12 -13 grains of Unique with CB's up to ~400grs. I've tried it in my Marlin #336 [.45-70] and found it both accurate and pleasant to shoot.

Tell us what the load was and we might get close.

There is a Lyman load listed with a 293gr #457191 with 12.0gr of Unique (and polyester wad) at 1200fps and 13,200cup pressure.
Also a 322gr #457122 with 9.5gr of Unique (and polyester wad) at 963fps and 9,600cup.

I'm confused, I thought we were talking about a 300gr LFP.
Sorry, I don't have any data with a 400gr jacketed and Unique that has pressures listed. But if it is any help Lyman 46th Edition places the 11.0gr to 15.0gr with a 405 jacketed in the Trap Door class (up to 17,000cup) and so is the H&R Shikari.

data for the 400 is relevant to the 300gr boolits.
you might go a bit faster but the pressure will be lower.

I've loaded for the H&R replica Officer Model Trapdoor rifle since they introduced the rifle in 1971 for their Centennial Anniversary.

My favorite loads have always centered on 405 grain (Lyman or Lee) plain base boolits, but I found some data for a 315 grain round nose boolit with Unique that I played with for a while.

315 grain linotype sized to 360"
WLR primers, WW cases, moderate crimp
11.5 grains of Unique
Average: 1150 fps, ES: 40, Sd: 13 (10 shots)
Accuracy was 4 MOA for 10 shots and it held well through 200 yards, but it was no match for heavier boolits for accuracy or performance at longer ranges.

The 405 grain projectiles shoot tighter groups and hold well at much longer ranges than the lighter boolits in both my H&R replicas as well as original Trapdoors. In duplicating the cavalry 45/55/405 load for the H&Rs, I've found Tightgroup powder to be the most uniform powder for both ballistic uniformity and accuracy. To duplicate the 45/70/405 infantry load I like slower powders like 4759 and 4198.
