So I picked up a barrel in a non-standard chambering the barrel is marked "333x2 Ackley 1-10", but nothing coming up on google. So before hitting the books thought I would ask around.[smilie=s:

No experience, but my book calls it the 333 Short Magnum (Ackley). Make from 338Win Mag brass and says to F/L size in the 333 die and trim. Sounds easy the way they put it...

I'm thinking it would be a good cast boolit caliber - just need to get some measurements.

I'll try to get the Ackley Books out. If you need information and I forget PM me. I'll try to get you a copy. His books have many different neck downs. Teddy

The 333 tells me that you will have lots of fun trying to find jacketed bullets for it now, The .338 Win Mag pretty much killed off all the .333 cartridges.

With that bit of distasteful news out of the way, it would probably be a pretty good elk round.

Well I did refer to them as distasteful.

I probably wasn't as clear as I should have been. I have slapped myself (lightly) once on each wrist.

Okay. The 333 short magnum (Ackley) is a No 2 Ackley short .30 caliber magnum necked up to 333. Luft or Ackley 333 short magnum can be used interchangeably.

Only showing Data for 275 gr. bullet in a 1 in 10" twist. I'll have to e-mail copy to you if you need it.

Or do you have the 333 magnum using a 300 Improved Ackley (blow out Weatherby 300) base neck up to the 333. Ackley did not like this chamber as he posted no data, and thought it would be better to use a shorter magnum case.

Now after reading I starting to think that the 338's may use a 333 bullet, or maybe its a .338 bullet for both.

Your going to have to slug that barrel.

Ackley does follow up later in the 338's area saying that a 338 base on a shorter Magnum case is a gun at bore capacity, and good for all large game in North America.

The Hornady 9 th edition has a longer list of 338's neck up and down. 338 looks to be a nice heavier rifle for some of the larger animals.
