Ok I just bought a swiss k31 off gunbroker and I would like to try some cast in it. I will mainly be shooting jacketed ammo but it is fun to have some light paper punchers. I recently used the lee 113 grain .309 bullet in my 30-06 and it was accurate and a lot of fun! I used 10 grains of 700x. Could I use this load in the swiss k31? Any suggestions? Thanks!

That is a starting load for your 30-06 and it looks to me would be a midrange load in your K31. Somewhere over 1600fps. I could be wrong. I'm sure others will chime in on this with more info. I also have a K31 but also the M1911 7.5x55. I've been shooting 150grn and larger out of both. They seem to like the heavier bullets more.

Do a little research on this caliber. I did and learned a quite a bit.

The 06 and swiss cases have almost identical case capacity. With the Swiss being only slightly smaller.
The k31 is my favorite milsurp to shoot, fun and accurate.

It is a fun rifle to shoot along with the m1911. And very accurate.

So fun, I've had 5 k31s, 1 k11 and 1 g1911. Wanting another k11, with good muzzle, but most of them were worn from heavy use and never got the barrels replaced.

I shoot nothing lighter than 150grn out of the. I'm still working up some hunting loads for them. I also am working on a load using the 311299 cast bullet and the 311291 cast. I use the 314299 in my moisin 91 / 30.

The k31 was designed to shoot a 174gn FMJ bullet out of a bore with a 1:10 twist rate.

I have found however that in my K31, the Lee 155gn 7.62x39 bullet, gas checked to .309 works well.

I suspect that that a 113gn bullet would be a tad light for accuracy.

Could I still use a pistol powder with the heavier grain bullets? I'm only looking for like 1400 fps.

Yes, I've used the Lee 230 blkout and 7grs of titegroup. I'm not familiar with 700x but it's in the same range with Tg. 7grs is as high as I dare to go with the Tg at a approximate 1200fps, presure signs started at 8 grs. the heavier the weight with faster powders the faster the pressure builds, it's easy to get into a dangerous zone much quicker as weight goes up. Not to mention what happens if you get a double charge with that fast of powder, that k31 ends up embedded in your face, arms and anyone around you. Not trying to scare you but it's happened before. The k31 reciever is no where near as strong as most any other receiver like the 1903, k98, rem 700 or savage, it's just plain out less forgiving than most.

My pet bullet for K31 lead bullet reloads is the Ideal 311413, 169gr GC listed in the old Ideal catalog as "the 'Squab' - the most accurate target bullet to 600yds". The mold is always for sale on eBay.

I resize the bullet to .309 and reload with 46.6gr IMR 4350 and a CCI 200 primer.

Last Spring I took the rifle with the 311413 reloads to Ridgway R&P Club that has a 700-1000yd steel silhouette range. Using stock sights, I kept dancing within inches on a 1000yd Coyote. Then I connected - down went the Coyote. This August back to Ridgway with a 12X scope on the K31 to run the steel from 700 - 1000yds!

I also use the 311413 in my '94 Winchester Lever Match Rifle for 200 to 500m silhouettes. Best 30-30 group thus far: 7" five shot group on a 500m (546yds) Ram Swinger

Could I use 700x with the lee 309-160r mold? Im just looking for a light 100 yard load to punch paper and such. Thanks for the advice!

If it was me and 700x was all I had, I would, starting low around 5grs and slowly working up. But I would much prefer a slower powder in the range of 2400 to 4895.

My 6 to 7 gr of titegroup loads are great plinking loads, but are just boring. If your shooting in a area that you want to make sure that the bullet doesn't go far, for safety, it's great. But I would want more for the accuracy potential in the k31.

Try it. You can alway's raise up the rear site to compensate

I bought a 175 gr. custom mold sized exactly for my K31 and it fit like a glove. But it also shot glove size groups. In desperation, I tried every mold I had to get this rifle to shoot. Best load I've found is LBT 309-115-FN, 16.2 gr. SR4759. Everything says it shouldn't work, but it does.

I have shot the lee 155-312 (sized 309) over 24 grains of 3031 and it shoots quite well(from my K31)
I also have some Lee 93-311 loaded over 7 grains of 700x (w a tuft of filler) but have yet to try them.
