I want to make prelubricated wads for my .45 Navy. I use .454 balls.
What size punch do I need for that?
My guess is .50 is too large for that.
Any ideas?

I use a 7/16" punch that I purchased for $1.00 at an air show in Oshkosh years ago. The wads fit my chambers well enough (takes a .451" RB though), but 11- or 12 mm may be better.

Buffalo arms, Trac of the wolf, and I believe Dixe sells wad punches in the needed sizes both hammer type and drill press mounted. Use a piece of hardwood end grain to cut into. A general arch punchor hole punch can be purchased at most tool supply shops. Get a 7/16" ( .437 roughly) and work it up to .455-.460 dia wads. Thus can be done with a drill motor and a 3/8 dowel and various grades of sand paper. Be sure to work the full length of the punches track so wads arnt compressed going thru. You want a lubed wad that presses in snugly with just thumb pressure then seated when the bullets is pressed in, But will also seal the chamber on its edges. Lube can also be rolled out into sheets 1/16" or so thick and used under bullet.

I use a 45 caliber punch I bought from Buffalo Arms and it mounts into my Rock Chucker press. I bought a yard of 0.060 fiber gasket material from a local company named San Diego Seal. I cut it into strips a tad wider than the wad and punched out a couple thousand in an afternoon. I works well for all materials such as newspaper, poly, etc.

All I want to know is; what's a 45 Navy? I could probably guess (I probably have one) but then again maybe it's something I haven't seen before.

the cornell wad punch press die that baco sells is just flat out awesome.
