Favorite 30-06 Loads with 311291

I was going through some old files and found a sheet of paper where I had written the favorite loads for 311291 in the 30-06 round. These date from 2003 and were posted in response to a question by me on the old board. I just pass them on to you for reference.

Sundog - 21/IMR 4227 and 23/N120

Maven - 29/IMR 3031, 24/4198 and 22-23 grains of AA 5744

BruceB - 27/4895

311291 is one of the old Barlow designed Ideal bullets for the 30-30 and has remained a consistent favorite for several 30 caliber rounds for over 100 years.

Char-gar, et al, there's an error in the above. To wit, I never used nor recommended 4895 so the 24 gr. charge can't be right. I did, however, use and recommend 24gr. IMR 4198 with #311291. Since I wrote that, other, better powder choices have become available and I would unhesitatingly add AA 5744, 21 - 22gr. with a variety of CB's in the .30-06.

Honestly my favorite .30 mold. Tried it in almost every .30 I've owned since I started casting. Next is 7.62x39 in a .308 bored rifle.

I really like the 311291 over 2400 18.0 gr. in 30-06. Yes best load I had in the 70's shot them at 50/100/200 yard matches at my club and won a few.

Also I killed 4 deer and 1 bear my 13 yr old nephew killed with one shot using that in my rifle. If I had a 30/06 still it would be my first load tried.

Enough Alliant RL7 to push them 1,920 fps over a chronograph.

For the heavy 200 grain and up bullets. I've been burning through a jug of AA 4064. It's quite a bit different than IMR4064. Shorter stick and different burn rate. It measures good which is very unlike IMR 4064's long stick. Burns extremely clean in my cast bullet loads. Accuracy seams to be less than with my RL7 loads. But to be fair I've not done much side by side comparison. On the same day.

I like 17gr Unique under a Lee C309 150 F with gas check. My 30-06 loves them as well as my 300 Savage with 10 gr of Unique.

Hey, thank's for starting this thread. Once I get my 160gr boolits figured out in my -06, I plan on playing around with NOE's version of 311291, I think the mold is marked 311-202gr ? I don't have it handy to check for sure.

I was thinking of building a 7.62x39 in a 308 bore and was wondering if it would work or just be a waste of time. Also what twist rate would be best? I guess that would depend on your choice of bullet? Any advise most appreciated........Thanks!

I'll add 12 grains of Unique. Very accurate, relatively low velocity, but with a higher pressure peak than my other favorite, 32 grains of 3031.

I'm in an auction for an Ideal 311291 mold. Will this boolit chamber in my M1917??? Does it crimp in a 'crimp groove' or need I use a taper crimp???

Only 2.5 hrs remaining for my decision to buy it. Thanks so much for anyone replying.
