My father gave me an 1895 in .45-70 he acquired about 1972. He never shot any Boolits in it. Can someone suggest a combination of bullet and powder that will function through the magazine and shoot well enough to drill .45 caliber holes in deer?

I've had very good results with 405gr FN cast and IMR 4064 with my own 1895. It is a load that I developed with four objectives in mind. You won't find it in any manual that I know of so have a care. What works for mine might not for yours.

1. Decent velocity without leading and no gas checks. 1400fps
2. Develope enough energy for adequate penetration. 1762 ft-lbs
3. Be recoil comfortable. 24lb with a 7lb rifle
4. Be accurate. 2" groups at 100yds are normal in my rifle

The load was 43gr of IMR 4064 with a winchester mag primer. It is not suitable for Trapdoors or weak actions of similar type. It fills the case well and the bullet seats gently on top of the charge, but does not compress.

Hope it helps ya :coffeecom

My buddie who cast 45-70 bullets for me which I am going to try in my new H@R BC 405 .457 FP with a bhn of 8 say to try IMR 3031 44.8 grains should be close to 1650 FPS that shoot excellent out of his lever action.
I will give it a shot in two weeks after the early m/l season. He also stated his cast will do excellent with blackpowder loads @ should not have any problems with barrel leading as long as I don't go over 1650 FPS.WILL SEE
Any comments are welcome

lyman has some wonderful deer (and up) boolit designs
lyman 457122 is a 330 gr hollow point that has been a favorite for over a 100 years .it is probably the best deer sizer game boolit you can get .

lyman's 457643 is a 400 gr boolit designed spasificly for lever guns . it has a nice wide meplat for killing game .it works great on bigger game .

there are other molds out there that work great to but these two will work for 99% of NA hunting . just wish they came with gas checks cause personly i like to go fast .

The Lyman HP shoots very well in my Micro-groove Marlin with 24 gr. of 4759 and a tuft of dacron, but only when I load it as-cast. I reamed out a .457 sizer die to .460 so that it just lubes. My rifle was made in the late 70s, but I've heard some of the very early "new" 1895s were not MG. Can't swear to the truth of that, so it would be a good idea to slug your barrel.

............NuJudge, I suspect hunting where you are that 100 yards will be a practical long range shot? Most any 405 gr cast lead slug of ACWW or softer, like 2/WW & 1/soft lead will pretty well make a deer lay down and give up the ghost at any muzzle velocity from 1200 to 1400 fps. You can certainly go much faster with your rig, but at legitimate iron sighted woods ranges the flatter trajectory won't mean much and won't really kill one any deader.

Oh, you might be able to shoot through a 3-4" tree first and still get your deer, but other then that a 1400 fps MV will do all that needs to be done.

What powders do you have on hand?

I have a 405 grain Lee mold that I used to use with a Remington Rolling Block. I am looking at using it (if it will feed), at the Lyman hollowpoint, and the Lyman 457643.

You name the powder, I probably have a bunch of it.

I'm following this thread with intrest, I have the newer Marlin 1895G, and have been using RL-7 and IMR3031 behind a 405g boolit, 44gr of RL7 seemed to be my best load. I'm going to try Sharpshooters 4064 load and see how that works.
I just got a Lee 340gr mold today and casted up a bunch, I loaded up with Varget to try tomorrow.

If you believe in K.I.S.S. (i dont ,the more complex the better :lovebooli ) heres what you do .

get a lyman 457643 mold
use air cooled wheel wheights (found at wallmark parking lots)
size to .459
load with IMR 3031
anywhere from 40 to 50 grs (1350 fps to 1750fps and 14000 cup to 28000 cup)
go hunting , save your money for beer and women

this combo will work on anything in N.A. (iffy for the great bears but it works better than a lot of other things out there on them) with in 150 to 200 yards
