For some of you older guys that have been casting for a long time, you won't be getting much from this thread.

However, for some of you younger casters that are fairly new to the game , this photo may be of some help to you.

You'll often hear some of us talking about " bore riders ". Here is a photo of a .30 cal, Lyman 311335 , weighing 207 grs. that I tapped into the muzzle of my 1903 Springfield, 4 groove barrel a few minutes ago. It is very easy to see the nose being supported by the lands in the barrel. This bullet mikes .3008 on the nose and .3106 on the rear bands.

Ben, how deep is the land engraving as shown in the above pic?

I don't have a way of actually measuring the depth of the engraving " land mark " that you see on the nose in the photo above , I tapped the bullet into the bore ( up to the beginning of the driving bands of the bullet and stopped there ) with a small brass shop hammer using soft gentle taps. The bullet went in with some resistance but not a lot.

It was fairly easy to push out with a cleaning rod. A couple of soft taps with the cleaning rod and the bullet fell out.

you don't need much with the bore rider just enough to get the boolit started into the bore straight
i shoot the 165 rcbs, thats just like it at about 2250, out of my 20" ruger 308.

I'm looking for good things out of this bullet from several of my .30 cal. rifles , 06's and 308 Winchesters . Hope that I'm not disappointed. The " as cast " dia. of the bullet is as follows :

yep that is almost dead on to my 165
i am using a 4/6 mix and jakes [hard lube]
in the 308 with 31 gr imr-4895 that is my 50 yd load
i have taken this up to 39 gr near 2300 fps
settled down near 27 gr and am tuning on it near 2200-2250.
if i could shoot this 5 lb ruger better i would get better groups but it
recoils hard at the bench, can stand and shoot it like a toy all day though

Ben,
Who is the maker of the caliper in your pictures?

CM :

I looked on the mic for a manufacturer's name. Nothing written on the mic. I purchased it used at a gun show for $20 for an older gentleman who was getting out of reloading.

I suspect it is an Asian product. However, it has always worked flawlessly for me.

I suspect it is an Asian product.
Somehow, that doesn't surprise me...since no maker's mark is visible.
Had it been produced locally, the American propensity would have necessitated one of those gaudy logos which indicate pride in workmanship...and provide a name to complain to if the device doesn't perform.

I suppose the Asian anonymity allows the manufacturer to honestly state that he has never received any complaints about his product...

It is a very nice mic.

You can read it manually without the battery ( 303 / 357 1.5 Volt ) in it, or use the dig. display with the battery in, I checked it against 3 - 4 good reliable mics before I wanted to put too much " faith " in it.

It passed with flying colors. I've had this one about 3 - 4 yrs. and with pretty hvy. use, it has worked just fine.

I agree that it looks like a useful one. That is why I asked who made it.
