Is the 221 Fireball the same as the 300 whisper?

300 Whisper brass is usually made by necking up the .221 Fireball brass . However, I've read several articles that recommend using .222/.223 brass. This means you are "necking down" the body of the case and then cutting off the excess brass. This gives you a thicker neck which can be turned for consistency.

when the 221 fireball cases are necked up to .30 caliber the overall length ends up about 1.375" after fire forming. I use RCBS dies which are supplied with a tapered expanding mandrel.
With the loads of AA 1680 and the RCBS 30-150 FNGC, I get a slight ring of lead at the mouth of a fired case.
I bought a RCBS file trim die when midway had one of their eBlast sales. I had picked up a Stainless 10" barrel and had it cut for the Rimmed Whisper to use 357 Maximum (trimmed) cases for cold weather hunting with gloves on.
A friend bought his father a TC Contender / 300 Whisper 10" for his 70th Birthday. I volunteered to load him a hundred rounds, well he is my friend too. A bucket of LC 223 brass and an afternoon with a fine cut hacksaw and file and now I can have 1.395" oal brass that works way better with the cast loads.
The RCBS file trimm die and the necessary extended shell holders cost upwards of $100...but then 221 brass is about $30 a hundred and what public range isn’t littered with 223 brass?
MT Chambers, what twist is your barrel? I've been hesitant to shoot lead thru my SSK 1-8. Thanks, Steve

This is a fascinating caliber. With .223 brass and lead 30 cal boolits, I'm surprised more has been done here on cast boolits with it.
This will definitely be my next project. May start out with an AR-15 upper... :drinks:
I could cut down brass on my lathe. Even the LEE case trimmer will trim down brass pronto with a Makita.
FWIW My AR upper is an early one when the prescribed method of making brass was to neck up 221's. I can't use cut-down 223 brass unless I turn the necks. It can be a real PITA for a weapon with such an voracious appetite.

My Pacnor .300 Whisper barrel is 1-12 twist and i use a .310" Lyman 311332 out of pure Linotype.

the actual trim to length for whispers is 1.355" I have not yet found the max case length for my chamber, need to get one of those neat little gauges that sinclair sells.
