Hi Guys, I bought a Ruger American in Blackout thinking it would make a great boolit rifle. And I'm sure it will be with the proper mould. The question is which mould? Am leaning towards 140 to 180 grains & gas checked. I am not really interested in subsonic so no reason for the heavyweights. I have no experience with the short case neck and long throat of this combination. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Tks, Bill

The Lee Double Cavity Mold 309-113-F produces a .309 diameter 113 grain round with flat nose bullet. To date, I've only this boolit for .30 Carbine. I've shot jacketed bullets intended for the .30 Carbine in my 300BO Handi, and they've performed well. At some point, I hope the try this boolit in the 300BO.

I do have the Lee Double Cavity Mold TL309-230-5R for 300BO, and it shoots great.

the rcbs 30-165 silhouette boolit does very, very, well at about 13-1400 fps.

Somewhat depends on your twist & alloy but I use the 31-145C & 142C plain base to 1700 without problem. Very similar to the 30XCB but for powder coat & slightly larger meplat. Depends on what you shoot at. The bolt gun will give you more powder choices for the lower fps.

Try Lyman 311299 it is a 195 gr boolit but it works well in just about any .30 cal. rifle. Look for about 15-1600 fps and the accuracy will be there. Doesn't matter what cartridge is pushing it along the speed needed is going to be the same.

With that round the more weight (up to a point) that you can push along with it, is going to give you the best results. For poking holes in paper it doesn't matter but for shooting Dirt Clods and Steel Targets the extra weight comes in handy.

It takes a pretty solid hit with a decent boolit to anchor a Dirt Clod with one shot. Other things laying around on your range might need the same treatment.

311299 is a common boolit and works well in all .30 cal rifles so you could get great results with your .308 or .30-06 as well.

Smoke4320,

I've been looking at the NOE 30XCB myself for my Rem 700 in 300BO but read (in this forum I think) that it is no gpod for 300 BO. Something to do with it being designed to fit the 30-06's throat.

Is your experience different?

Who makes the mould you refer to? And I'm using a 7" twist. Tks, Bill

Those are Accurate Mold references:

Tom makes great molds BTW.

I used the 145C for the 1:7 carbine with 4227, didn't chrony that load - I gave that upper to my SIL. He did about 2 moa @ 100, first try with an AR. The 142C is for my 1:10 range toy. Alloy for both is Isocore. Both boolits are slightly modified 31-165B shortened to remove the GC shank and reduce weight so I can push super easy. I load the BO and 308 (31-165C) the same, base at the shoulder which puts the front band (sized to bore) in the freebore/throat, nose doesn't touch the lands. I don't know the ruger chamber so IMHO I'd do a pound cast of the chamber then check mould dwgs for fit.
Oh, accuracy in both uppers was about the same as 168 &155 Amax's with Rx7 powder.

This sounds cheesy but I have had very excellent results with the Lee 155 in supersonic loads.

The Lyman 311291 has also been a top performer. The NOE 311365 is also fantastic, and I have had success with it both sub and super.

I like Miha's 311410 mold which has a hp or small flat point options and can be had with or w/o gas checks. He has a few still available out of his last run, I just bought a plain base mold to make subsonic boolits for my Remington bolt gun. The deep hp weighs 124 grs and the short hp weighs 132 grs. I didn't weigh the sm flat point but it should weigh about 135 grs. I am getting approx. 1888 fps with this one.

My new best load in my bolt action .300 Whisper(Blackout) uses the MX2 bullet of Eagan design and made recently by NOE it's 190 gr and shoots well with 1-13" twist custom barrel. It's also deadly accurate in my .30 BR with it's Shilen 1-12" barrel. I have not tried it subsonic and prolly won't.

Glad someone else suggested the 311-291. It's where I start with any 30. Seems to perform in all of them including the little 300blk.

If you plan on hunting, there's no reason why Ranch Dog 165 or NOE clone won't be a supreme performer. They're deadly in .30/30s, so should perform equally weel with full loads in 300BO.

I had problems with all the common lighter weight bullets up to and including the Lee 312-155 not wanting to feed correctly. I had just purchased the NOE 311299 for my 03-A3 and thought I would try it in the blackout, it worked without a hiccup and it shoots great. I believe the problem I had was, under recoil the cartridges in the magazine would move forward and this was making them not feed straight and jam things up.

I had that same problem with the 311041.......rounds will occasionally not feed at all. Tks, Bill

The Lee 311-155-2R does feed in the Ruger American......just so you know.

Lee now has a 6 cavity 312-155. I purchased one as this is my favorite less than 200gr boolit and it feeds perfectly in both of our 300AAC uppers.

I've had feeding problems with the Lee 311-155 in my Ruger Amaericam Rifle (RAR). I finally went to the NOE 311414 and it feeds okay. I have to keep my hand under the magazine (to push the magazine up) for reliable feeding of the NOE bullet.
