.41 long colt cast bullet suppliers

Got ready to reload for my colt new army DA, just to realize western bullet was fresh out of stock anything in that caliber. Doesn't seem anybody online is doing that caliber. Your suggestions and information is much appreciated.

I think I have some 41 magnum brass. My old reloading manual doesn't show me spec differences between 41 colt and 41 magnum. Possibly just length?

I also have some 41 jacketed. I don't think I have any cast lead but I will look

I am a relatively new member and am not up to the required 25 posts before selling so it may be a few days before I can "make a deal"

Nope, Tim. The 41 Colt is a strange beast that uses a heeled boolit. The inside of the case is .386", the bore is .400! Think .22 rimfire, that is a heeled boolit as well.

As for the brass, I am going with fire forming 0.38 spl. It is something worth trying as the brass are rather expensive themselves.

Nothing is cheap to hand load this caliber, except the revolver; I got it for free. But it was so beat up that I have worked many hours to bring it back to firing condition. Now it is time to pay the real money.

I started out by fire forming .38 Special cases. Starline did not make them at that time. I used a neck expander to expand the neck and then loaded a bullet with Red Dot or Bullseye powder. The neck expanded portion was long enough to center it in the chamber. That was expensive, since I bought bullets instead of cast them at the time. After a while, I got a friend with a metal lathe to make a full length neck expander for the .38 Special case. Fire forming was not necessary after that. Unfortunately, I no longer have the full length neck expander.

Remember that if someone makes a full length neck expander for you, that the bottom must be narrowed (tapered) down to match the thicker wall near the bottom. Without that, the case overexpands at the base and is very difficult to size back. It is much better not to over size it at all.

I have a few samples (from other people) of ones made from 30-30 cases, 7.62x39 cases, and 41 Magnum cases. They look like an awful lot of work with a metal lathe. My way was much easier and never had one fail at the low loads that were used.
