thankyou Ranch Dog for another wonderful shooting boolit:drinks:
and thankyou 44man for putting me onto the SR4759 powder.ive been emailing 44man back and forth for a couple of weeks while ive been playing with the 45-70

the best load ive found with the 350 grain Ranch Dog boolit is 28 grains of sr4759 and i light things up with a lg mag pistol primer.this barrel isnt a one holer but it will print between 1.5" and 2.5" at 100yds.the group above is right at 1.5".i cast the boolits out of straight wheel weight lead andd water quench right from the mold.this barrel has no or little throat.when i crimp in the crimp grove the boolit will engrave the lands when i close the action.there is no signs of leading with one heavy coat of ALOX

By no means am I sure about Encore/Contenders .

But ............

When I first started loading cast I started with a 45-70 Marlin (of course) and was using SR4759 . And with great results I might add !

I have since pretty much switched over to XMP5744 . Not that it does any better but it seems less picky about it's position in the case when you touch it off !

I load both of the Ranch Dog 45 cal bullets for 45-70 lever guns and have had good results with XMP5744 and both bullets :drinks:

Now with all that being said I do keep a pound or so of SR4759 on my shelf just in case something doesn't like XMP5744 [smilie=1:

do you have some favorite loads for 5744. I bought a keg of it a couple years ago and to be honest have never even tried it in anything.

Certainly [smilie=1:

The 356 WIN and the Ranch Dog 359-180 with 27 grains XMP5744.
The 375 WIN and the RAnch Dog 379-210 with 23 grains XMP5744.
The 30-30 and the Ranch Dog 311-165 with 22 grains XMP5744.
The 444 Marlin and the Ranch Dog 432-265 with 35 grains of XMP5744.
The 444 Marlin and the Ranch Dog 432-285 with 34 grains XMP5744.
The 444 Marlin and the Ranch Dog 432-300 with 32 grains XMP5744.
The 45-70 and the Ranch Dog 460-350 with 34 grains XMP5744.
The 45-70 and the Ranch Dog 460-425 with 31 grains XMP5744.
The 32-40 and the RCBS 32-170 with 15 grains XMP5744.
The 38-56WCF and the Lyman 375449 with 20 grains XMP5744.
The 40-65 WCF and the Lyman 403169 with 24 grains XMP5744.
The 375 WIN and the Ranch Dog 379-235 with 21 grains XMP5744.
The 356 WIN and the Ranch Dog 359-190 with 25 grains XMP5744.
The 32 Special and the RCBS 32-170 with 20 grains XMP5744.
The 25-36 Marlin and the Lyman 257325 with 12 grains XMP5744.
The 33 WCF and the Lyman 338320 with 22 grains XMP5744.

I started a few years ago with this powder and I gotta say , if I "wanted to" it could keep my powder inventory down quite a bit ! However do not get me wrong I will continue to keep and use SR4759 !

But at the moment for most of my cast lever guns I can just about load everything with XMP5744 , H110 and Unique !

Now I also keep all three of the SR powders on the shelf and Trailboss , 2400 , Blue Dot , 296 and some others I have forgotten .

However for the majority of what I do in cast lever guns the 3 powders I mentioned will pretty much cover them all !

Lloyd after looking back over my list it just struck me that I have not tried it in the 35 REM yet ! With the RCBS 35-200 and the latest Ranch Dog 359-190 I used SR4756 . But I am thinking that XMP5744 might be a good candidate in this case as well [smilie=1:

Lloyd I used the XMP5744 with the 30 caliber 150 grain GC bullet that 357 MAX came up with. Was using 22 grains in that load and they were cutting ragged holes at 50 yards using a peep ! At 100 they opened up to a little over 1.5" .

I also tried Boomer Mikeys 434-330 with XMP5744 and although results were leaning in the right direction I am not totally satisfied with that one yet ! But I can say 29 or 30 grains of XMP5744 is a good place to start with that one !

Jeff , sorry for the over abundance of info that is not really pretaining to the original thread

Lloyd , I could be wrong . But I think the two bullets Boomer Mikey is working on now for the 375/38-55 will make excellent silhouette bullets when loaded with XMP5744 .

It is my intention to try both of them in my old 336CB in 38-55 with XMP5744 [smilie=1:

But I'm hoping I can get that rifle to like the 200 grainer more or close enough to the 230 grainer that I can see myself using it for silhouette !

6pt-sika please tell me what you mean when you said "I have since pretty much switched over to XMP5744 . Not that it does any better but it seems less picky about it's position in the case when you touch it off"

i am very new to shooting the 45-70 and i dont know what you mean by picky about its position in the case.should i be using some kind of filler to keep the powder near the primer?im getting a good burn with this powder but i have only shoot from the bench.come hunting season i may be high in a tree shooting down, would that have an effect on the accuracy with the 45-70?i know there's alot of room in the 45-70 case

i have also tried IMR4198 with some 300grain jacketed boolits but the accuracy was poor and i was not getting a good burn

Jeff , normally when I shoot SR4759 I will lean the rifle rearward after loading to get the powder back against the primer . And I have used it when up in trees , but I try and make sure the gun is butt down before I ease it up to shoot .

XMP5744 does not seem to be as critical about this .

Some folks say use a filler of some type with the SR loads , I have never done it before . I did get the innards from a couple stuffed toy animals for just this purpose , but I have had people tell em that synthetic filler may ring the inside of the barrel !

I have also heard of using one square of toilet paper . Typically that should either blow out or burn out !

But the XMP5744 does not seem to get much mention of using any of this stuff . Plus I have shot it some when I knew the powder was in positions not close to the primer and it seemed to do just fine !

As far as IMR4198 is concerned I have never used that with a cast bullet ! I have however used it with jacketed bullets in the 450 Marlin , 45-70 and 444 Marlin !

I think when shooting a deer at 100 yards or less the powder should not make a big difference from the position , but I'd almost be willing to bet when shooting paper from the bench you can most likely see a difference .

I use 4759 in my BFR with and without a filler and see no difference. The powder fills a lot of the case. However 5744 did NOT work in the revolver. The gun, bench and cases were full of unburned powder and velocities were very low. Accuracy sucked. It might be the cylinder gap, I don't know.
I tried all weights of boolits and different primers up to LR.
It might work in the TC though.

I'm glad you guys are have a good time with the bullets. Its been windy for a month, too windy to test bullets. You'd think it was March!

i did some more shooting over the weekend.i replaced the pistol forend with a rifle forend and i really like the way it holds to the bags,1 1/4" and 1 3/8" at 100yds
