Good Evening:

I am in the process of buying the Savage 11/111 Trophy Hunter XP. It has a 22" barrel with rifling of 10:1. I will start out with the Lee 220 grain bullet mould (C338-220R). I will be casting with wheel weight alloy.

While there are a few threads regarding the 338 Federal, I am writing in the hope that there may be some new information someone may have to share. I have several powders most of which are listed by the powder manufacturers for the 338 Federal for reloading manufactured jacketed bullets.
(Yes, it is quite a number. I buy when I find powder on sale.)

Using an online reduced load calculator I can achieve 1800 fps, my arbitrary starting point, with the loads indicated below. I used the manufactured bullet closest in weight to the Lee (a 215 gr. jacketed bullet). So, I would start 2-3 gr. lower that the grains listed. And I don't know what weight the bullets from the Lee mould will be using the wheel weight alloy I have. So, I have some work to do.

They are, in order:
H4198, *
H322, 27.9 gr.
H4895, 30.2 gr.
IMR 4895, 31.3 gr.
H355, 29.3 gr.
Bl-C(2), 32.7 gr.
Varget and 31.6 gr.
H4350. *

* No data found

I welcome any information that you may have acquired from your own load development for the .338 Federal.

Thank you,

MichiganMike

My friend Bryan shot this out of his Tikka 338 Federal a few days ago.
He fired 5 rounds into 3/4 " at 100 yards.

Impressive ! !

The bullet is Al Nelson's 235 gr. G/C , .340" diameter cast bullet.
So far, it has shot very well out of Bryan's rifle.
These below are lubed with Ben's Red and then rolled in BLL.

Thank you Ben,

I have some H4198 that is in the general vicinity of 4227. I will have to take a closer look.
