I would like to recreate the trapdoor carbine muzzle velocity with 405 LRN boolits in my Ruger No 1. I would like to use 2400, as this powder is what I am using in 7.62x54R,303 Brit, and 7.9x57 Mauser reduced power cast boolit loads. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Start at 20 gr and use a 1 - 1 1/2 gr dacron filler. Work up in .5 gr increments until 1100 - 1150 fps is reached.

Got around to shooting the Ruger No 1 with my handloads:

Lyman 457124 (avg 382 grains) sized .459
Winchester LRP
1.5 grain Dacron fiber

19 grains 2400 gave 1260 fps
20 grains 2400 gave 1320 fps

I was somewhat surprised at the (high) velocities. Should I continue to download the charge of 2400 to obtain my desired 1150 fps goal? The powder charge seems extremely low already at 19-20 grains in the huge 45-70 case.

I wouldn't reduce #2400 below about 18 grains in the .45-70. The 14 grain Unique load will be close towhat you want, and I wouldn't reduce that below 12 grains.

Why not just buy the Lyman Cast Bullet manual? You'll find all manner of loads there, and with powder supplies being more controlling these days for what's AVAILABLE to load, you'd be way ahead of the game, wouldn't you?
