Set up my new RCBS Lube-a matic 2 today and all is good - except..... half of the lube inside the lube groove has become black, while the other half remains the yellowish 50/50 color. The discoloration occurs at the same spot on each bullet. What gives??

it's oil.

This issue continues after approx. 200 45-70 boolits with multi lube grooves. If it is oil, I would have thought it would be gone by now.

What happens if you size the bullet not once but twice in the die. Is there more black?

Because that is what happens in my Saeco. I have used for years but still the second time turns the lube black. I have no idea why. Never bothered to find out because it doesn't matter.

You will probably have put in another stick of lube (or more) until you get the oil removed.

Entrapped air will give you some weird colors. AND wait until you change lubes with something else in a radically different color.

We call that Zebra lube.

Just a question, This RCBS LubeAMatic, is it actually NEW or just new to you? The reason I ask is if you don't fully clean out the old lube it will continue to "zebra lube". Ask me how I know.

I find that the Lyman Ideal 50/50 Alox will turn dark just from being exposed to the atmosphere. The old Ideal bullet loob was black, I like it when it turns black. The RCBS loob that came with my new RCBS LamII last year turned black after being applied to the bullets.

Might just be pressure on the lube squeezing out oils.

air turns lube a white looking color, like water does to motor oil.
