Hello! came aboard momemnts back. Figured to check things out for myself on this board--heard some about it. Got me a little project goin on in a short bit this winter. Searching now for any info on an old "original" wildcat in this caliber that might enlighten me as I do this. Going to use my old pre64 94 .30-30 that belong to my Uncle if I can find a few replacement parts as I either rebore or rebarrel this and purchase some dies. Sure the .35Rem is there and so are a few others but I am goin for the .35/30 chambering. Share with me what you know of maybe there is some material or an author of articles of whom you know. There is a fellow named C.E.Harris I read that done some articles for Fouling shot and ain't got a clue how to get it for a read on this caliber.thanks

Grizz,

Yep. And the 35/30-30 Win is listed in Quickload. So the world is open to ya. I just played around with it and had a 250 grain bullet at 2000 fps at @ 36,700 psi. So it would make a fine hunter if you are so inclined.

Because I already have a 16 twist in 35 rem, I would entertain a 18 twist 35-30, to better handle the pistol boolits including the Saeco 180 grainer flat point in particular. This boolit alone would be a deer killer at 2200-2400 fps, and if quite hard (not brittle), would go completely through any soft skinned animal even if it hit bone. ... felix

I know of 2 people who have .30-30 and .32sp barrels being rebored to .35-30, I do not believe any have been completed yet, but it was done some in the 20s and 30s.
A smith in , I believe , Wyoming, is set up for reboring and has been doing some jobs for people on other forums.
I shall see if I can check back threads and find the name.

Ok;
Here is what I found with a quick search;
Dies are available from C-H 4D, about $65.
The smith who rebores barrels is ;
Dan Pederson, Classic Barrel and Gunworks,
Prescott , AZ.
His web site is ;
cutrifle .com.
Hope this helps, Don

Did you get a price for the rebarrel?
gunpartscorp.com has 356 win barrels. I picked one up and I'm planning on putting it on an extra mod 94 I picked up. I'll just have to keep the pressures reasonable. Looking at Quickload, it shows the 356 case only holds 5 more gns of water. So if the dies are cheap and brass is easily made and the rebore isn't too expensive... Sounds like a great project.

It looks like you could get a 180 cast doing 2400 from the 35-30-30
and 2500 from the 356 win useing 40,000psi and Win 748

Keep us posted, I'd love to see your project when it's done.

Accurate manual shows 2700 fps from a 180 fn speer in the 356 with a max load of AA 2015. It only reaches 2670 in my gun but it is accurate. I have not found a 180 grain cast bullet that isn't so short it has to be single fed as they jump past the carrier and over shoot the chamber. The 245 gr Saeco 352 works good crimped over the top band ahead of the crimp groove and the LY 358627 is great if you can find one. Mine is going elk hunting this fall but not with a 180 gr bullet. well I can tell you all that you have fuddled my brains some. The reason the Big Bore is made is to accomodate the higher pressure. If I am not mistaken the .38-55 is fitting for a replacement but the .356? That would be a very good cartridge indeed with some good bullet selection. Penetration is a must where I live , if deer meat was on the menu then the 35/.30-30 would suffice. As I study the cartridge I really see where the use is at ---silhoutte shooting. I have the levergun pretty much taken apart exept for the barrel and......the hammer and bolt. Not to many parts really just a matter of practicing where goes where, don't seem like a real problem. But clarify the matter at hand. The pressure issue using the oringinal 94 receiver. I have all winter to figure out what I am going to do. I have received many a response and I welcome them. I will look at that site for the barrel. Wife kinda gave the nod to go ahead--kinda.

I read an article on the 35/30-30 many moons ago in Guns and Ammo I think and was immediately impressed by it. I think the main reason it was done was to clean out neglected bores from cheap rifles. It should be an improvement on the standard 30-30 and allow practice with cheap pistol boolits if desired. There is only one barrel maker that rebores barrels in Australia and he isn’t real interested in doing it anymore. He will for historically important rifles to preserve the original exterior, but he charges about $20 less than a new barrel. He stated that he had trouble with Winchester steel occasionally and was loathe to rebore any more of them.

There is a conversion which is even better I believe and that is the 35 Lever Power. Apparently it is a real PITA to make the cases though. I will probably end up with both of these and I am partial to getting a 35Remington (no doubt I will have to relent and buy another Marlin. At present I have managed to keep it down to one token Marlin in 45/70). I have a 30-30, a 357mag, a 44Mag, a 44/40, a 375Big Bore, and a 45/70. I need three or so 35 cals to round the collection off.

Hmm’ a 405, 303 Brit, 30/40 Krag and a 3006 in 1895s would go ok as well. Now there’s those single shots I was thinking about………………………….!

Now that would be a different set up. Should work ok as well. Maybe if I ever shoot my 375Win barrel out (yeah right!).
