I just picked up a 2 cavity Lyman #454309, a kind of odd, button nose wadcutter in .45 cal. Weight is 240 grains in WW's. Anybody ever mess with one?, cartridges used in/loads?.

I loaded some in .45 ACP brass for my brother to try in his S&W 625, but no reports yet. Thanks.

Nobody has used this funky little boolit? Maybe they only made 1! I should put it on E-bay!

I have one and have used it quite a bit. Check out the castpics articles on Heavy Bullets in the .45 ACP.

dubber:

Ideal/Lyman #452309 was introduced in Handbook No. 32 (1936): "Recommended to those who wish a sharp shoulder wadcutter bullet for the .45 Colt revolver." The 1958 "Handbook of Cast Bullets" shows it with a shooter's comment: " 'I find very good results with this bullet at 25 yards with 3.3 grains of Bullseye in my .45 Auto.' Robert C. Stykemain,Toledo, Ohio." It was last listed in the 1978 Lyman Annual Products Catalog. The 1978 Second Edition "Cast Bullet Handbook" (p. 230; see CASTPICS) shows it at 235 grs. in #2 alloy and taking sizer top punch and 310 tool seating screw #374 (same as the GI profile #452374).

Thanks for the replies gentlemen, it looks like I'll have to start looking in the Castpics section first, then ask any remaining questions.

Dubber, I found one on a gun show table late last year, but have not tried it yet. Thought it might be a good option for my S & W 25-2 with the agravatingly oversized chamber throats. Will cast some up as soon as I run out of my usual acp loads. Just bought some starline auto rim brass so will probably try them. Maybe use as cast depending on what dia. it throws. Am in the same boat as you for the moment.

If your copy casts as fat as mine, filling the cylinder throats shouldn't be a problem. Mine casts at .456".
