I've had a Savage & North .36 for several years now. I like to shoot it once a year. Mechanically, it's in great shape, but three of the nipple holes in the cylinder are stripped, so I can only load the other three. I've been searching for a long time for another cylinder with all six holes. I missed one on ebay last year, and again a few weeks ago - an ebay seller had two for sale, but I came across it after the sale had ended (they didn't sell). I contacted the seller and explained my situation, and he relisted the two cylinders and a backing plate/recoil shield. I was the only bidder, so I won the two cylinders and backing plate. The seller was great - he actually sent me three cylinders an told me to keep the two that I liked and return the third - or keep it, too, if I wanted to (I'm sending one back). The two that I picked are in great shape - the nipples are peened in one but they work, and are easily replaceable with Ruger Old Army nipples.
It pays to keep looking.

I load about 15 grs FFG and a .380 roundball, though it could actually use a .390 roundball. It's a beefy gun that should have been a .44.

Good deal. Jeff Tanner will make you a RB mould for a good price, any size you want.

Are these related to the Savage Arms Co. in any way? Is that a double action cap and ball?

I have wanted one of these myself for quite a while. Hopefully I will find a clean one some day that is not crazy priced.

Reminds me that I have a new-in-the-box Lee 2-cavity .390 round ball mold. If you can use it I will gladly send it to you with my compliments, knowing that you are keeping that old bit of history working. Send a PM with your mailing address.

It's actually a lever action cap and ball. When you pull the ring backwards with your middle finger, it cocks the hammer, pulls the cylinder away from the forcing cone, and rotates the cylinder. When you release the ring, the cylinder moves forward into the forcing cone, forming a gas seal. Firing is done with your trigger finger. Cocking the hammer alone does not rotate the cylinder. It's actually a very fast cocking/shooting action once you get the hang of it.
