Ok I have learned that the sheath the bayonet comes in is called a 'frog'?

where did that nomenclature come from?

I'm guessing, and this is a guess, that it's from the French. What that word is I don't know.

Frog isn't the sheath, frog is the leather part the sheath hangs from. You will see both old sword sheaths, and old bayonet sheaths that are smooth except for (sometimes) a "button" on the metal collar of them. The button on the collar actually slips into a slit in the frog to hold it in, and usually it laces or buckles as well to keep it attached solid. The frog then has a belt loop, or shoulder baldric attached to it.
