Can anyone tell me the maximum Cartridge Overall Length that the magazine in a Ruger 77/44 in 44 Magnum can handle?
thanks,
Stu

Can't you just make a few dummy rounds and test them yourself?

although I can't give you the number you are looking for
I had the rifle you do and it was critical to have the o/a on the money
for it to function properly

tryNto, no I can't as I don't own the rifle yet. I'm trying to find out if my favorite, large meplat bullet will load in the rifle BEFORE I purchase it.

I have worked on many, Shortening stocks for youngsters, etc. of course I had to shoot them! :bigsmyl2:
If I remember any 240 to 250 gr fit the magazine but my heavy boolits did not. I shot mine single shot and the guns shot them well. Just seat a 240 to the cannelure or crimp groove.
I suppose the hardest job was to fit the original butt plate to the little Ruger auto and it also shot my boolits single shot. I wish Ruger would have lengthened the mag.
But they are fine guns.

I guess I should have put up a photo earlier to show what I'm after. The 44 Magnum (obviously) is the cartridge to the right. Just wondering if it will fit the magazine. Think I'll ask around my gun club and see if anyone has one.

Yes, it should. the nose is not as long as mine, you just need to see if it feeds with the huge flat meplat without hanging up.

I'm assuming the 77/44 Mag is the same as the 96/44 - which I load for?

I don't think that short fat Boolit will feed at all from the magazine. I won't be back home till Monday, so I can't check on the OAL. When I first got my 77/44 I went through all kinds of Boolits in my 77/44 with negative results, I finally went to LBT Moulds and had a custom mold made and that is what I use for plinking and hunting.

The OAL limit on the Ruger 77/44 is 1.610.. Most .44 factory ammo is loaded to 1.595 so there is an extra .015 for clearance. Boolits with rounded noses would tend to work better in this gun.

The magazine is the limiting factor and you literally can't alter it. This eliminates using .429244 in a magnum case. I can't say if your Flying Trash Cans will work or not but I would think there maybe some problems with feeding them just because of their shape.

You can Single Feed the gun and use any Boolit you want.

Or you can load hot .44 Specials that end up being .100 shorter,,, which opens up the use of SWC boolits and LFN style boolits which improve the usefulness of the gun.

The LBT 250 gr WFN Boolit would be my first choice for this gun and it will load to below 1.600. It has a .360 Meplat and is very close in design to your Trash Cans however it has just enough curvature on the nose to facilitate feeding. I use these in my Marlin 1894 CB and they are devastating on steel targets.

I would expect them to equally as devastating on game.

You can buy these boolits from Beartooth Bullets to try, and if you like them Veral Smith will sell you a mould.

A 250 gr boolit at 1600-1800 fps is going to have a significant effect on anything it hits.

No need for the trash cans either. The .44 is at home with a WLN or RNFP. LOOKS bad is all.

The trash cans are my revolver bullets. Just wanted to see if I could shoot them in the rifle and I always thought bullet choice was a pretty individual thing.

Stu1ritter, I just checked, the mold I got from LBT is a 432-280 LFN, it throws a 280.6 gr Boolit using water quenched WW. I found the best accuracy with 2400 powder at not quite a full charge, giving me a bit over 1500 fps. That load blows right through both shoulders of deer at 150 yards. Send me a few of those soup can Boolits and I'll seat them and see if they feed. Hell I'll shoot a few and see if there is any accuracy with them.

altheating, what size do you need? As cast they are right at .433 but everything I have in inventory has been sized (for my revolver) at .432, closer to .4315. If they will work I'll mail them out Monday. PM me an address. I also have a 240 g. Keith from Accurate I'd like you to check. Be glad to send some of those along also. I wouldn't load these toooo hot as they are around BHN 14, again, for lighter loads in my revolver. I could always cast up some really hard if you want to hot dog them. Thanks.....

I think I'd be more concerned with the loa of the chamber.
Perhaps check out any old factory load and you should have no problems in that regard.

"loa" has nothing to do with cylindrical form.
