new 7 1/2 shot + pure = my head hurts

howdy Men, got a question.

One of my shooting friends moved to Virginia and left me about 40 pounds of new 7 1/2 shot
and about 40 pounds of roofing lead ( should be close to pure )

I searched for some answers and my head hurts from all the opinions on what to do with it.

I need lead for my 357 and 44 mag WW + a little tin have been working for me.

I would say I need something about 12 0r 13 BHN

So what do I do ?

I am not a metallurgist so it needs to be relatively easy.

Any hints ?

If it's magnum or hard shot sb is approx 6%. If it's chilled or soft shot sb is about 2%. To my knowledge there is no sn in shot.

use the shot to load shotshells for the 357, you can sell them for good money. haven't seen 357 snake shot in stores in ages.

What I would do is smelt the roofing lead and shot and make ingots.
Smelt wheel weights and make ingots. Mark each . Time to cast , drop one of each in the pot till you got a 50/50 mix, add a bit of tin if this doesn't cast easily.
My free, unlimited supply of wheel weights sold his tire shop. I used to cast everything of straight WW metal. To stretch it, I started mixing the WW with lead or range scrap 50/50 . Discovered this mix worked better than straight WW for cast handgun and 30-30 cast loads.
Not very technical but it has been working for me.

Sell the shot to trap shooters. Buy wheel weight ingots and mix with the roofing lead.

And here I am thinking I would like a nice source of 7 1/2 shot. (I shoot trap).

I've been shooting 1 oz. loads of #8, want to move to 7 1/2 for handicap.

Around here the lowest price for 25 lbs of shot is $38 Much higher at the local Cabelas / Bass Pro Shop in think in the low $50 range.

Pretty much $44 or higher where I live (southern Wisconsin). I buy my shot from a buddy who drips his own; I get it for $34 per 25#.

OK, I will think about selling it or trading it for WW metal.
What would be a fair trade one for the other ?

as a added note, the wonderful alloy calculators work just fine in Google sheets
so save them to your Google drive and then you can use them anywhere, even on your phone!

If its numbers are like most of the shot listed in our forum alloy calculator, mix it 50-50 with your pure lead (after cleaning both up) and add a couple percent tin. That should give you something pretty close to your wheel weight mix.

Maybe, big brother is always watching.
I do not charge and friends buy components and I will sit them at my press to let them load with instruction like a hawk. I do load for a few but just bring the stuff.
