Any recommendations for a high b.c. boolit for a 500 s&w in a h&r break open rifle ?
What mold would you suggest ? Will be powder coated and g/c if needed.
Have loaded j word 400 grainers at 1825fps with 50.0 grains of aa 1680 (worked up from 45.0) and no sign of excess pressure.
thanks for any ideas

I shoot lee modern improved minis as hollow base wadcutters which are not what you are looking for. However they did prove to me that the 50 cal muzzle loader molds derserve a look for 500 S&W boolits. Some guys like the REAL projectiles. One of the African hunters, John Bulmiller I think wanted to use 1/2 inch copper rod chopped up in short pieces. Big heavy boolits don't slow down fast even if not streamlined. I find the 500 Handi great fun as a reloaders toy. Mine has never been polluted by factory ammo. A 360 grain mousefart load is interesting.

Isn't the title of your post an oxymoron?

Good luck on that, at half an inch diameter. Neck it down to 6.5mm and you're golden. hehehe

Seriously though, chop off the ogive of a .50 BMG and plant it on a .5-inch bearing band and see whether it can even be chambered without going past the cylinder face...then think about a 1/8-inch long 9° boat-tail...

It's a good idea, I toyed with BC improvement ideas for .357 Mag 30 years ago, but there's just not a huge amount of room for improvement.

I designed a .44 boolit long ago for long range, rounded ogive to a small nose pour meplat. I never got the accuracy and the difference between it and a WLN at distance was nil.
I got it to shoot super at 50 yards from a Marlin but it was sad at 100.
After shooting 500 meters with WFN boolits and getting extreme accuracy, I found no need to look for better. The difference between a WLN and WFN is nothing to write home about.
The higher velocity from the rifle should be enough to flatten trajectory. Even that will be useless without accuracy.
My 330 gr .44 boolit at around 1300 fps cuts round holes at any distance and at 100 does not show anymore drop then lighter boolits but it shows up at 200 at 35" but has done a 1-5/16" group at 200.
My 45-70 BFR with a WLN drops 16" at 200 and the 420 gr .475 WFN drops 18". The .475 kept 4 out of 5 on a 6" swinger at 400 yards, first miss was to find hold over. It was a fun day. The swinger was being shot at by a bunch of rifle shooters and I asked to try it, they said "go for it". I shot creedmore. After, many rifle guys packed it in but a bunch came to see what we were shooting since Pete also hit 3 times after I got him on target. They could not believe it was a revolver.
