I stopped at a local scrap yard to see if they had any tin/pewter for sale, no luck. As I was walking away the man asked what I was doing with it, and I told him. He asked me to wait up so he could get his XRF. in a corner of the shop he had several 70 pound blocks from a foundry. The XRF reading is SB 6% SN 13% PB 81% so I bought one block for $49.00.
All I need to do is smelt to a more workable ingot size and figure how much WW or Plumbers lead to mix for casting boolits.

Sb is antimony, Sn is tin, Pb is lead.
they are the labels from the atomic chart.
you may also see Au or Ag referred to [silver and lead] or even Cu which is copper.

lead alloys are usually [99% of the time] labeled as Tin first, Antimony second, then whatever else then lead.
so if you see something like 1/3 referred to, that is 1% tin and 3% antimony, the remainder mostly 99.9%Lead.
if you see it written as 2/6/92 that is 2% tin 6% antimony and 92% Lead.

in this case I would add the block to ww alloy as a mixer.
using 13 pounds of ww alloy to 1 part of this.
that would give you enough tin to pour good boolits, enough antimony to make a small difference, and the lead would just be there.

Yep I would be back after another block as soon as finances allowed. 71 cents a lb. for some pretty good alloy. No doubt, good deal.
Think of it this way. Every 100 lbs. of this is costing you $71 but has 13 lbs. of tin in it and that tin is worth about $10 a lb.

I think runfiverun gave you a very good recipe for this and WW's.

I'm surprised that no one noticed the reference to Au as lead. Au is Gold which at the moment is selling for $1188./oz Troy.
If ya find any at the scrap yard, go strait to the bank, and borrow the limit, then get all that scrap Au.
BTW Ag is at a long time low also.
Just picking R5R.

Lucky it's not in my neighborhood I'd have a bit of a hard not buying all of it! Seems like a good deal for quality material. Congratulations on a good find.

Yes you did, good job.

not a problem.
I'm pretty sure the scrap lead we all use has waaay more stuff in it than just tin and antimony.
cobalt, calcium, indium, silver, zinc, iron, bismuth I'd lay down cash money saying it's all in there somewhere.
even foundry certified alloy has some trash in it, it's just low enough to be called pure.

I bought some one time that had something like 0.05% Hf - Hafnium, never even heard of it before that, lol
