View Full Version : Nice write up on Hi-Point firearms in American Rifleman.

I was just reading the current issue of the American Rifleman magazine and there was a nice article on Hi-Point guns, Pistols and carbines. The Owner of the company is apparently selling the company but will maintain status as a consultant according to the article. But the most interesting comments were about the life time warranty which will still be in effect, and he stated in print that if you shoot cast bullets and get some leading, just shoot a few jacket bullets and it will clean up. Absent were any comments about how cast will bloow you up or ruin your day. Just a comment about cleaning it out. Pistols and carbines alike, Cast will not hurt them. Cool, Huh?

I caught that. Nice to see some positive press about them. I really like them. They are priced so about anyone can buy one to defend themselves, are clunky, kinda weird looking but go bang every time. Great finish on them, too.

Warranty: I bought one used from a friend and it had some missing parts. I called up Hi-Point and they sent me the parts at no charge the next day. Great company to deal with.

I was hoping the accuracy on the .45 carbine would have been a little better. I have heard the 9's and 40's shoot better, but I really would prefer the .45 for a beater Jeep gun. I still might have to have one. :)

Those who have slugged a few Hi Points will discover that the cause of the leading is that the barrels run to larger diameter than most other manufacturers deem standard. At least the ones I've slugged are. The accuracy is a little indifferent as a result, IMO.

I had one of the 9mm carbines. it shot okay but, was so butt-ugly I couldn't stand lookin' at it so I traded it for a chainsaw.

The one I had was a 9mm that I got because it was about $100 cheaper than The 45 that another store had. It shot really well with a lee 9mm conical boolit that I sized at .357 I sold it before I could get around to trying it with a 150 gr round nose boolit. Every bit as much fun as a 22. I will replace it at some point.

Wish I could say I own one but since they are labeled as an assault weapon here in Crook County Il I can not possess one.

A nice reliable inexpensive home defense gun that I can shoot every time I visit my friends home over in Indians.

My C9 never fails to go bang, is accurate at 25 yards with every type of ammo I have fed it... yes the barrels tend to run over sized, I cast a Lee 120-TC, tumble lube and shoot it, no sizing needed.

They are also fun and easy to decorate!

I really wish that Hi-Point would re-design their carbine to run a Glock magazine. Then I'd have to get one. I really don't want to have an extra magazine style to keep track of.

My 9mm does lead, just another reason to powder coat.

BTW, I do not go along with shooting a jacketed bullet thru a leaded barrel.

What is lead in a barrel? An obstruction of course.

Haven't read the article yet, but my first thought was "Wow, Hi-Point is finally getting the respect it deserves"

If they made magazines that would hold 20 or 30 rounds I'd
buy one of the carbines in a second for a truck gun.

Recently a friend mentioned having inherited a hi point 9mm. He was leery of it since one of these in .40 belonging to a friend had the barrel split down the middle.

I like the looks of their carbine, but these pistols are as butt ugly as they come.

I have to admit I've been on the fence with the carbine. I think that article just tipped me over it. As for size, if it needs it bigger that can be done.

I like to start with any new gun by slugging the barrel, and lately I have been doing pound cast's of the chamber as well.
For the work involved it is nice to KNOW what is going on in there.

The carbines are not easy to clean. The pins that hold the pistols together through polymer has kept me away from ever purchasing, but hey if you like them I wont knock your choice. An ugly gun is better than no gun. A chainsaw is prettier.

I'd get a carbine if they held more than 10 rounds. If they did what was suggested above and made a version that used Glock mags, or even something like Uzi mags, I'd jump on it. I also think they would increase their sales by quite a bit.

This my answer to the Hi Point. Mech Tech 45 1911 conversion. Had it since 1992 or so.

American Handgunner Magazine did a positive piece on Hi-Point as well maybe 7-8 yrs ago. Their take away was similar.

bigger magazine is right.
in fact a hundred round drum would be appropriate for their little carbine rifles.
I hate loading 10 rounds at a time, then smiling just about the whole time I'm loading 10 more.
the smile starts to fade after shoving about 7 rounds in the magazine.

I have never had the little carbine refuse to feed or shoot anything reasonable [heck even unreasonable works in mine]

358 diameter shoots just fine b.t.w.

My Garand only holds 8 rounds in the clip!

Buy more mags, learn fast magazine change.
Heck, 10 mags gives you a hundred rounds loaded.

that 15 rounder would be better for sure, 3-4 of those would be close to what I paid for the rifle though.
100 would still be just about right

I've read that the promags are meant only for the pistols, and that they can cause damage to the carbines. Hi Point themselves have said that there is only a 50/50 chance they are going to actually be reliable. Your stuck with the factory mags.

Looks like you will have to be satisfied with loading 10 then 10 then.

Or sell the carbine and buy a Garand.

Oh Wait, now we're back to 8 at a time, but the clips are cheap, only 1 or 2 bucks each.

Try loading more than 5-6 rounds in a pro mag 15 round magazine and watch the following rounds try to stack up HORIZONTALLY instead of at the angle they are supposed to line up in the magazine.

Please do not ask me how I know.

I'd love a Garand, but dang they're pricy. :(

I guess I'll have to settle for a Hakim with 10 rounds of 8mm. :D

I miss my old beat up Garand.
it looked horrible but shot well.
I doubt I could find one for $475.00 now [which is what I sold it for]

I love my 995TS and my wife has come to love it as well. To the point she is demanding her own. Is it ugly? Sure, beauty is in the eye....... Is a M4 easier to take take down? Yup. Hi point only requires take down and cleaning at 1500-2000 rounds. Are you limited to 10 round factory mags? Yes, be proficient with your shot placement, the 995TS is very accurate. What is the single most important factor with any gun? It goes bang, put a check in that box. The 995TS is my home defense gun, my XD .45 is my back up. I've been thinking of getting the 9mm hi point pistol as a back up since 10 round mags are interchangeable. The .380 hi point pistol I have is very accurate as well, don't limp wrist it and it will function every time. The price, dependability, warranty, accuracy make these guns hard to beat. Hi-point has my loyalty!

Glock mag use would be a huge plus!

I've been happy with the 995s. They've seen use as house gun, truck gun and fun practice gun. I've never been upset about them having only 10 round magazines. I'd have bought something else in the first place if I thought it was going to be an issue.

I've only put 10 rounds in when the use is as a house gun or truck gun. When I shoot them at the range I normally only put 5 rounds in at a time.
