I want to start loading for my Marlin 30-30, and of course I would like to use cast boolits. I found the Oregon Trail 170gr gas-checked boolits on Midway and figured they would be a good place to start since I'm not set up to cast my own or put gas checks on. Does anyone know of a good source for load data for this boolit? I tried castpics but to no avail. I plan to use IMR 4198 or Reloader 7 if possible, since I have both on hand.

You need to invest in a Lyman cast manual, good stuff.

I have one in my cart on Amazon, just haven't ordered yet....guess I probably ought to do that!

Per Lyman #4 CBH

RL7: 20 - 28.6 gr

IMR4198: 18 - 23.5 gr

Start at the start load and work up in .5 gr increment. Your Marlin has a 10" twist so let 100 yard accuracy tell you if the "max" load for your rifle comes before the max listed load.

When you order the boolits from Midway order the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook , 4 th Edition, and you will be all set to go!
Online stuff is okay, but having printed materials and other great info in a good old fashioned book that you can look at, read, make notes in the margins etc., has it beat six ways from Sunday.

you ain't gonna find that boolit in a reloading manual so just use data for one similarly shaped and weighted.
the number-3 manual is a good one to have on hand too.
I bought another number-3 after looking through the number-4 in the shop.

I see there is a lazercast manual on amazon:

That data is peculiar as it is presented two ways - as 30-30 and 30/30. The 30/30 WIN has a broad mix.

First thing I bought for using cast in my Marlin microgroove was the Lyman M-Die Neck Expander, the '30 Short' one.

And sizing the driving bands to 0.311

NOE now offer some custom replacement expanders that replace the standard lower insert of the cheap Lee Universal Expander Die, giving you a huge choice of M-Die like Neck Expansion for a fraction of the cost.

Thanks for all the good info guys, my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook is on it's way! I'm sure I will have some more questions once I get started loading.
