I've been considering hollow pointing boolits for 38 special. I'm considering the NOE 360-154-WFN. I've never done any loading of FN or WFN, just SWC and RN. Anyone used this boolit in 38 special? Hollow pointed it? Plan on using the Forster setup for the HP'ing.

I've used my Forster Hollow pointer but I don't have that mold. If you want expansion you have to get the correct alloy or the nose just cracks off (secondary projectiles).

My current go to handgun alloy is 96/2/2 aircooled. I would start with that. I would experiment from there if needed. Hell that's half the fun!

Have you considered NOE's RG offerings?
If HPs are what you're interested in, they'll definitely make life easier if used correctly... And you'll get FN punches, too.

I have the Lyman 358156 HP but haven't tried it yet. Years ago, I shot the Lee 150 SWCHP in .38 & .357, and it worked really well, but with straight WW's, it'd expand and break off the nose as Artful notes. That one came out, lubed and sized, at 142 gr. I softened the mix with about 50/50 mix of WW and soft lead, and it really did a good job. Penetrated fairly well, and opened up even in a 2" .38, but they were +P loads, or close to it to get them to do that. FWIW?

I messed around with the Forster HP stuff for a while and please let me encourage you to buy a HP mold. Seriously. I did and I don't regret it. Lead gums up the drill bit, bullets slip and pop loose, it's hand crank only for this because a drill motor turns too fast for drilling the lead, and it's just a general pain.

For the 38 spl I think that would be a poor choice. Velocities are low(800-900fps) and that alloy is pretty tough, I would suggest 98/2 lead tin if you want expansion.
