Thinking bout casting for 223/556.

Have a 1/8 twist 556 barrel and a 1/9 556 barrel.

What velocity can I achieve with a 70gr Plainbase? How much would Tumble powder costing help?

Seems that for any 223 cast boolit, a gas check should be used.

You already answered your own question. Yes, a gas check would probably be a good idea. It would be helpful too if you would let us know what rifle you are loading for. Bolt gun, Ar, etc.

I shoot plain base up to 1800 fps from a Hornet with decent accuracy and no leading.

plain base will not be your friend.
look in the military rifles section and at beagles write-up in the cast pics section.
there are some tips [and threads] in both areas that will help get you going.

I shoot cast in both 8 and 9 twist AR rifles, the accuracy is good, the velocity is in the 2800 fps area, the work to do it is not fun and is time consuming.

Being as tight as I am I tried the no gas check route to save 3 cents/boolit. Couldn't keep them within minute of berm. Rifle: AR-15, 1/9 twist. I did get it to shoot good enough for what I'm doing, (2-1/2 MOA for 3-gun) but it's Plus 1 on not fun and is time consuming.

Ive been messing with the Lee Bator mold for my 9 twist DPMS 3G2 AR. Just started powdercoating but using a gas check as well. Accuracy is fine for shooting swingers, but the bullet is too short and small for my guns throat. I puonded a soft lead slug to measure my throat and came out .229" just in front of the case.

To get closer to lands and fit tighter in throat i just orderd a NOE 228 72Gr. RN 4 cavity GC last night. Got a lead pot thermometer, mold drilled for temp probe and ordered their temp probe to try to be as consistent as possible.

If i can get it to 1.5"@ 100 it will be wort it, but that's to be seen yet.

I know it's a little off topic and a small hijack....I apologize for it now but how deeply are you seating the bator bullet?
