Ranch Dog 460-350, load data

[IMR 45-70]

Hey fellas,

Would like to work up some loads for my Marlin GG 45-70.
I've got some 350grn. GC, lubed & sized boolits i've recently made with my Ranch Dog, Lee mold from WW lead, but my manuals don't give data on this weight rnd. with IMR 4198.

How does a starting load of 45 grains sound?

I am assuming that you are aware of the three differant load/pressure levels for the 45-70 ?
45 grs IMR 4198 ? well....
Hornady lists 45.3 grs as max level 2 load for their 350gr bullet
Speer lists 46.5 grs as START for their level 3 loads
lyman shows the pressures for a 385 grn cast with IMR 4198 as starting @ 41.5 grs 25,400 psi to 50.5grs 37,500 psi for max .
IMRs data shows for their "High Pressure Loads Only" with a 350 grn bullet (unknown make) 42 grs start 47 grs max .
given all of the fuzzy data IMHO 45 grns is a safe load BUT it is not a starting load , myself i would back off 10% and work up . ( i myself would work past this point but im not going to recommend doing that practice to anyone . )
for what its worth the velocitys were round abouts 1800 fps

I've looked at RD,s chart and from what i can tell, H4198 is very similar to IMR4198.
The chart shows a starting charge of 41.5 & max 50.5.

Eric do you know what your boolits weigh?the ones i cast weigh in at 352grains with wheel weight lead without the gas check.i just sized and lubed about 300 of them

im going to be using sr4759 powder and maybe imr4198 if i dont find a good load with the 4759.i wont be shooting a rifle though,they will be shot from a Contender pistol.i should be able to get a good thump on both ends

Jeff, I weighed several of them, and they all read 350 grns. After lube size & GC, they weigh 360. This alloy is from WW's.

That ought to be a blast - shootin 45-70 out of a contender. I use sr4756 powder to reload my 45 acp rnds.

it looks like they are casting right where they are suppost to be.when i bought the mold for making 45-70 boolits i hoped they wouldnt end up to heavy.the 350 grainer should give enough recoil from my Contender pistol.i hope the sr4759 works out,its a nice bulky powder to help fill the big 45-70 case.44man put me on that powder

my 35 caliber Ranch Dog mold drops the boolits around 192 grains,they were suppost be be at 180 grains but heavy is fine with me with the 35 caliber.
