IMR 4895 back about 1967. I had ordered a 1917 30-06 enfield while i was in the navy and mom got the box and didn't tell dad as he probably would have had a stroke. All my reloading stuff back then would have fit in a 20mm ammo can. Frank

Can't recall for sure, but it was either 4064 or 4350 in an '06. Those were good ol' days with adventure and learning just around the corner. Nowadays, it's mostly just about finding what the gun wants in order to do its best work, or for finding about what works best for a particular purpose. Always satisfying once it's done, but not nearly as intriguing as it once was. Now it's just part of the experimentation process necessary in order to get maximum performance from my guns and their uses.

Either 3031 or 4895 , IMR that is, In 30/06, with 150 gr hornady jacketed bullets, using old military brass that a friend gave me , and a lee loader that would not size all the brass small enough to fit the chamber, for a mauser action sporter that had a 2 groove springfield barrel fitted to it by a real gunsmith, that I got for $45 in 1967 and regret not still having it. It was life changing.

Don't recall exactly what was first but it was in the 60's and there was not much around...I do recall getting some DuPont 4831and as I recall it came in a brown paper bag from the gun shop...back then people called it "idiot powder"..they said to just fill the case (25-06 and 30-06) and stuff a bullet in it...they said you "can't overload" with it....Man those were the days of tie it to a tree and pull the trigger with a cord when working up loads...The "manual" in those days was some guy in the local beer hall talking about what he had loaded last week...glad I still have all my parts.

But the first Smokeless powder I personally loaded was Titegroup in .44 Mag of which was a huge learning experience for me lol. :)

4831 in a .270 WBY case. I was forty years old, and after using my grandpa's old SMLE for everything since I was 12, I finally felt like I could afford to buy a new rifle. I went right for what I felt was the max point blank yardage in a lower 48 capable rifle.
Sticker shock when I found out the ammo was nearly $1.00/round. That's what started me reloading. At the time, common rifle calibers were more like $5- $8 for a box of 20. I was still in an open sight frame of mind. I'd killed some stuff with the smelly, but what I had missed was due to miss-estimation of the yardage. Having never owned, (or even shot), a rifle with a scope, I was all about trying to keep the sights on the brown out as far as possible. I may be the only person ever to buy a .270 WBY with iron sights from the factory. Of course, it was downhill from there: scopes, neck dies, neck turning dies, more guns, more shooting, competition, more shooting, handguns, more shooting, handgun competition, more shooting, trifocals, more scopes, range finders, more shooting. At 60 I'm just really starting to think about where I want to be regarding the shooting sports, and whether I'm close to being there.

It was either Hercules Unique, or Red Dot in 45ACP, and 3031 in rifle.

Was so long ago, that I hardly remember anymore.

Unique.
Could be used in handguns and cast boolit rifle loads.
It was the only powder I used for years then 38 special target wadcutter loads demanded Bullseye.

HP38 into a 38spl case. Spring of 1997. It was for a very cheap Heritage Arms snubby. It was a gift and it lasted a me a whole 4 years before the barrel unscrewed itself. :)

The very "first" powder I ever dropped was DuPont FFFG Black Powder . . . back when it was 75 cents a pound! What can I say? I'm old! :-) I still have the can somewhere with the 75 cent price marked on it in black grease pencil. At the same time, I could buy a tin of Remington percussion caps for 25 cents a tin of 100.

The first smokeless I ever dropped was Bulls Eye - my favorite - in 38 Special.

It was DuPont Hi-Skor 700X in a 8oz can while I was stationed in Germany in 82/83, for both 9MM and 45ACP. I soon learned to translate German and was using Rottweiler powders, as DuPont were the only American powders I could find at the time.

My first rifle (bought with my own money, as an adult) was a Ruger 77 chambered for the 280 Remington. After consulting my newly purchased Speer Reloading Manual #10 I selected IMR 4831.

This is the only powder I used in this rifle. And it delivered excellent, consistent accuracy with the jacketed bullets I reloaded. My best result was three rounds touching at 100 yards, from a bench.

This was well before I discovered bullet casting.
