Is this fast enough

Ruger SR1911 45acp, 5" barrel, 200gr lee swc, 4.6grs of Win 231. Will this meet the requirements for shooting steel challenge. Never done it but thinking I might try. Thanks

Well as near as i can find min of 750, this load on hodgdons site says about 790 jist not to sure how accurate that is. I know lots of guys shooting the 231 dint know if someone had chronied it. Thanks

Hodgdon uses a longer barrel for their testing. Their MV will be faster than your 5" Ruger, but I can't tell you by how much. This site http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/ may be useful if no one chimes in with a chrony.

Is there a reason for a specific speed faster than 750??
750 isn't all that fast. I use Bullseye, and 4.2 gr. gives around 785 give or take 20 fps.

Ruger SR45 Chrono results:

4.7gr W231, OAL =1.185 to 1.187
2” group @ 20 yards
Chrono = 782 fps, pf=157, 273 ft/lbs

4.85gr W231, OAL =1.185 to 1.187
2” group
Chrono = 840 fps, pf=169, 314 ft/lbs

5.4gr W231, OAL =1.185 to 1.187
6” group
Chrono = 895 fps, pf=180, 357 ft/lbs

Have not Chronographed the SR1911 yet but found using same boolits, 5.0gr w231 and OAL of 1.224 give best groups, a ragged hole at 10yrds.

Used to use 5.6 or 5.7 of W231 to get 925 fps for IPSC when 180,000 was the
cut for major caliber power factor. PF is boolit wt in grs times MV in fps, so
200 x 900 = 180,000 and the extra 25 fps was a safety factor. Some match
bbls would make it with 5.5 or 5.6, most Colt 5" bbls took 5.7 gr to be safe.
