I picked up a pound of imr 4198 today to try in my .303 British and 7.62x54r. Up until now I've only used 2400 and red dot. Is a filler recommended with 4198? I'm using Lyman 314299 boolits. I've read the sticky on fillers but I'd like some input from you folks all the same

If the powder charge occupies less than 70% of case capacity, or about 30 grains in the .303 case, use 1 grain of well fluffed, Dacron polyester fiber, tucked loosely under the bullet as filler. Do not push the filler down against the powder.

You want that dacron filler touching both the powder and bullet, NOT packed tight but touching both.

Thank you both for the replies.

It's not the same ctg, but I use 29 gr of old IMR 4198 in a 7.5 swiss, under a 173 gr Lee boolit. I don't use filler, and haven't felt the need to do so. It may be a smaller case than your .303 brit.

IMR4198 is a relatively fast burning powder, to the point that it is useful in some pistol cartridges. It is not particularly position sensitive. Unless you demonstrate a need for filler, you don't need a filler. I doubt you will find that you have such a need.

Excellent. I've never used a filler and the thought of it freaks me out.

With the mass of the 314299 and the case capacity of the .303 you probably won't need nor find a filler to be beneficial, especially with loads in the 1750 - 1900 fps range.

Me too. Had good success with 25gr under beagled 185gr lee boolit. I used toilet paper once with 3030 and cast, found it worked just as good with out.
25gr old H4198, with said beagled 185gr lee, lubed with my 45/45/10 .1

I used 1.9 cc (yes I dip for plinking loads) and had some nice results in a VKT M91. Not as nice as the group above but not bad at all.
