Headed to Reno at the end of the month for wife's national bowling. I get to come along, but I think it is a ploy for me to carry her balls and shoes...and the extra carry-on baggage for the plane.

Looking for local treats and drinks (microbrews and BBQ!) suggestions.

We plan on renting a car and making a day trip driving around Lake Tahoe. Any suggestions for the lake would be great. Also possibly going to Virginia City, but I have a feeling it may be like Deadwood, which is only a hill away from my house.

In Carson City, there is a skeet/trap/sporting clays range (Capitol City Range?). I always wanted to try sporting clays, but.....

Some beautiful scenery along Lake Tahoe. Sorry, cant advise anything in Reno (Haven't been there in a long time)

BJs BBQ has been champions several times . I'm not certain where or if they relocated . They are Texas styled And have been pretty good but it's been a couple of yr since I had them . There is a brewery with decent food in Victorian Square in Sparks . Reno/Sparks are butted up to 1 another . Don't forget about Cabelas in Verdi and Sheels in Sparks both stores have massive diorama taxidermy displays . There's tons to do in and around Reno . I think the actual car that Bonnie and Clyde met their demise in at Gold Ranch. The Elvis gun collection may still be floating around , it changed casino's a few times . The State Art Museum is there ,the Wilbur D May museum (May Co) museum , what's left of Harrah's automobile collection too.

For pure gluttony Boomtown ,next door to Cabelas, has a all you can eat whole lobster buffet on Friday and Saturday 5-9 PM .

Santa Fe Hotel or Luis's Basque corner are a couple of good Basque places. if you are not familiar with that type of food you should be. At one time there were more Basques in a triangle of SE Idaho to Central Nevada than any place outside the Pyrenees. It may still be true.

Fanny bridge is a nice walk..on the California side. Gondola ride at heavenly in Tahoe is nice too.

Never had a good experience at boomtown with the lobster. Scheels sporting goods is a better experience IMO than cabelas. It's located nearby reno in sparks.

Remember you can shoot coyotes in Nevada without a license. You don't need to go to far out of town in any direction to score.

I'll second the visit to Scheels as way better than Cabella's, check out their fish tanks at both entrance's and go from there.

Never found a Casino in Reno or Carson that didn't have great chow, but if you get into Minden / Garnerville stop in at the Carson Valley Inn casino there Pot Roast Dinner is awesome.

Tahoe has way to much traffic for me these days and is much to small to handle it, besides I think it might still be a touch on the cold side.

Virginia City has gone to the dogs I'm sorry to say, my wife and I were married in the Silver Queen but 27 years later it was boarded up and the town has really slipped a few rungs on the ladder of life.

You may also want to visit Bear Bullets They handle reloading supplies and a bunch of them, located at 1231 Service Dr. Gardnerville NV

Open Sat 10 to 6 Sunday 12 to 5 If you need powder they will have it plus primers as well.

I'm pretty sure Bonny and Clyde's car has been moved to the FBI museum in wash. D.C.

be prepared for Reno.
it's not like a smaller version of Las Vegas, it's more like a couple of casino's on opposite corners of a 4 way intersection surrounded by a run down industrial park.

Wife and I really load up on it when we attend NCBS. JW

If you make the Tahoe loop .....
You will drop in over mt. Rose , which will be a nice drive up ... stop at the turn out going down in the basin and it will have the best view of the lake and it's points .... you will drop into Incline ,turn right , go west ....Incline is really high end millionaire, billionaire estate type ,won't see much , just a lot of the big iron gate entry's .
If you fancy that ,take lakeshore drive ..you will find it on your map , all the lakeside estates.
Head west to Tahoe City ,on the way there you will go thru Carnelian Bay , public beach access just before you get to the marina .. take a quick stop , bit of a pebble beach ...just past the marina there is a nice restaurant on the lake side , Garwoods ,has a good rep.
As mentioned , in Tahoe city , you will have lots of hole in the wall spots , Tahoe marina and mall is a nice little stop, good restaurants and shops ,one of my favorites , "Jakes on the Lake " on the docks .
A little farther down town on the north side of the highway back in a small center is "Tahoe Mountain Brewing"... great beer of all types ..
Fanny bridge as mentioned before , you will cross over the one outlet that Lake Tahoe has , it is the headwaters of the Truckee river..pretty much dry now with all that is "NOT" going on , the lake is quite a ways down below it's natural outlet level with how dry we are these days ...

Basically there is too much to see and do in one day but the drive around is really nice , if the traffic is not to bad and there are not too many projects happening.
Emerald bay is what everyone wants to see and it is a must , you will enjoy once you get there , just depends on the "people count" ..
going on around to south shore , if the timing is right , stop in at camp Richardson , hang a quick left and go down too the Beacon restaurant and bar ... a nice little stop right on the beach , step outside and take a walk ,you are on the edge of the lake for a nice stroll ether direction .. a lot of history in that area ( all around the lake for that matter).
Going on down to the "Y" , take a left start heading east to state line and you will have all kinds of choices for a quick beer ...
As mentioned earlier , the Gondola at Heavenly is a nice ride to take as it has the best views and experience anywhere, a bit expensive , about 45 bucks a head last time I went with the wife and daughter.
Right now a bit chilly with a minor amount of snow .
All kinds of hole in the wall shops in the complex there ,also Stateline Brewery is located below the shops to the North.
Worked good for me as I turned the ladies loose in the shops , I disappeared downstairs ...;-)

The have rebuilt one of the casinos ...now the "Hard Rock" ...haven't visited yet , probably won't.
Head north out of South Lake , go thru "Cave Rock" ....just a quick tunnel , great views .

Too much to see and do in one day but fun ... just depends on the "people count"

There are at least three "Bonnie & Clyde cars" being exhibited around the country. I even saw one travelling to county fairs several years back.
