let the smelting begin

Well guys finally got all my stuff together and am going to start smelting whenever this wind dies down. I have about 800lbs of reclaimed bullets to smelt. I will keep you posted.

If it's really dirty, i found that keeping a good puddle of molten lead helps melt what you add. I have dealt with some really nasty stuff, about 50/50 lead to dirt/rocks it took time, but i got a good result.

Another one i had was from an indoor range that used sheet rubber as a bullet trap. The projectiles were a mix of lead, jackets and rubber all mangled together. As the lead heats, the rubber melted into a black smelly goo. Took a few days to process with the help of my dad, but i got about 800kg when done.

I did about a half a pot tonight and I need a second muffin pan but I learned a couple things. My lead muffins came out at about 3 to 4lbs each. No major problems so unto the next one.

I melted down about 500 lbs we dug up at the gun club it was about 1/3 dirt, but it was free

Most definitely! I've "processed" over 900 kgs/2,000 lbs of range scrap dug out from a pistol range. Even though I spent a bit of time washing and picking out the bigger stones, it's amazing how much dirt and general crud still comes off it!!!
