I'm new to Cast Boolits and am looking for help with load for 158gr RNFP (nn GC) to be used in a Marlin 336

Will be using for Cowboy Rifle silhouette at the short animals, 50, 100 & 150 mtrs. For Rams I'm using a 200gr bullet

I have a suggested starting point of 9.5-12.0 max of Unique but am concerned about the small powder volume to case capacity.

I'd like a max velocity of 1,500 fps

Thanks for any suggestions

Ken,

I would start by checking if Unique is appropriate for the 158gr bullet, I sort of lean in to using SR4756 for this and some Dacron wadding to fill the void. Something like starting at 20 gr starting and maybe 23 grs Max load.

Some people Quaker Oats as fill in the situation that you describe, but I have never tried it myself.

The 47th Edition of the Lyman Reloading Handbook, had data for unique for the 195 and 206 gr bullets in a Marlin 336.

For the 195gr cast bullet starting load is 9.5 gr of Unique and 12 gr for the Max load, the 12 gr gives you 1525fps.

For the 206gr cast bullet starting load is 9.5gr of Unique and 12 gr for the Max load, which gives you 1465 fps.

For the 158gr bullet, I would suggest using 2400, starting at 10.6gr for 1422 FPS and maxing out at 14grs for 1740 FPS. This is what I use for my Contender loads in 35 Remington.

I hope this helps, start really conservatively on your loads and work your way up.

The Turkeys are going to require all the accuracy you can muster up with that short bullet and we don't even know if your 158's diameter is compatible with your 336. Are you casting the 158's or buying commercial boolits?

Very small charges of Unique can be position sensitive and require one to settle the powder against the case head before firing the round. To ignore powder position may cause large velocity spreads. 12 grains of Unique may not be so bad in the .35 but I know from personal experience that when used in the .45-70, large variations in velocity occur if you don't point the muzzle skyward before aiming. 12 grains of Unique is probably only going to produce about 1600 fps with a 158 grain boolit in the .35 and by the time that 'lil boolit gets to 100m it may ring hard set pigs. Why don't you use the 200 grain boolit for all the targets and just load to about 2000 fps for the rams while keeping the velocity down to 1600 to 1700 fps for the closer targets? I use 16 to 16.5 grains of #9 in the 30-30 under a 196 grain boolit for the near targets but double check each round with a flashlight before the seating operation to make sure I don't miss a case. While using 16.0 to 16.5 grains of #9, a double charge is very obvious.

meistro_jerry, you didn't really mean 4756 did you? 4759 perhaps? I'm thinkin' I'd not want to use 4756 in the load you mentioned. Back in the "dark ages" when Dupont made IMR powders they said 18 grains of 4756 in the .358 winchester with a 200 grain bullet was max. at 51000 psi. As always one needs to verify any load suggested by anyone even the loading handbooks. Be careful, stay safe, have fun. Regards, Woody
