I recently took delivery of a smooth side/adjustable paper patch mould from KAL Tool & Die for my Uberti 1885 in 38-55. I have been casting with it. I have not had a chance to do any shooting from it yet.

This is .369-2.5T-200 in KAL nomenclature. As pictured it is throwing a 270 grain bullet in pure lead.

As cast diameters have run:
ACWW (12 BHN) ....... .3690"
Range Scrap (8 BHN).. .3685"
Pure lead (5 BHN).... .3675-.3680 (somewhere between on my calipers)

Two wraps of Mead Academy Tracing Paper result in a pure lead boolit diameter of .3740" which is .0005 under bore for my rifle. Two wraps of a slightly heavier tracing paper I have on hand results in a wrapped diameter of .3750".

This is by far the nicest mold I have in my collection. It casts like a dream. I would like to thank Rick Kalynuik for making them available.

Range report to follow at a later date in the Uberti 1885, 38/55 thread (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=19451) in the single shot guns forum.

Looks like a true machinist's work of art.

How is the screw held in place?

How is the screw held in place?

The plate is mounted to one block half by two screws. The bolt is held in place on the plate with a lock screw coming in from the edge of the plate (other side of plate in above picture), similar to the way a sprue plate pivot screw is locked down.

Wow. nice mold. One thing I've been thinking over has been nose design on PP molds I like the RNFP this one has going on. I guess I need to just keep on reading and see what works :Fire:

Don't suppose you have a phone number or Email address for Kalynuik do you? I need a PP mould for my 38-90 that will make about a 375-390gr boolit.

thanks,

Rich

ktw,

thanks, I have a couple of questions, if you do not mind...

1. do you know how long/heavy a bullet your mould will cast?
2. do you patch only the bearing surface of the bullet? I ask because I am reading Wright's
book on Paper Patching, and he says nothing there (neither does Orville Loomer) about
needing to make the paper patch template shorter or taller to do that.

thanks again,

Rich

1. do you know how long/heavy a bullet your mould will cast?

The heaviest bullet I have tried to cast with it ran 270 grains.

Someone else asked the same question in another thread and Rick Kalynuik (Red River Rick) responded that the maximum possible bullet weight with this mold should run right around 400 grains.

See post #59 in this thread (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=19451&page=3)

I don't claim to be an expert on the subject, just another guy playing with it. I have been patching them long enough to make sure I was off the bearing surface and slightly onto the ogive, then adjusting my patch width to not have a lot of excess at the base (picture here) (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showpost.php?p=314336&postcount=56). This mold is hollow base, giving you a fair amount of space to put the folded over patch material.

The patch template I have is fairly wide (1.25"). Most of the patch strips I have been using have been significantly narrower (.75" to 1.0", depending on the bullet I am patching).

...............For a cartridge rifle, unless it has a leade for paper patched boolits ie: a gentle shallow angle, it's supposed to be the best deal to patch either just beyong the turn of the ogive, or place the leading edge into a groove, if such is provided. Both cases are to assure that the (Sometimes) abrupt leade doesn't push the paper back, or otherwise mess it up.

The above slugs were patched for a 45 caliber long range muzzle loader. The patch obviously doesn't reach beyond the turn of the ogive. I this instance since they're loaded from the muzzle base down, the patch isn't in any danger of being pushed up from the front.

This is for a Uberti Hi-Wall in 38-55. In this instance even though it is a cartridge rifle, after checking it was found that the leade was such that it also did not need to have patches begin beyond the ogive. If I was using patched slugs in a lever action, I'd for sure tuck the beginning edge into a crimp groove regardless what the leade looked like.

thanks to both of you. Now to get a reply from Kalynuik about a delivery time and set actual dimensions. I went with a Krieger .375" barrel for simplicity, it mikes .367/.375" and has the 1:12" twist.
