In my 'If you only could choose 3 powders thread"...

Sir Felix suggested for Mil Surps:

820

844

860 or 872

I looked up data on the equivilant commercial powders and that selection seems to truly handle bout everything that I shoot.

The only place I've been able to find thist stuff so far is Pat's Reloading, and when you average out the costs (without shipping) it works out to $6.90 per pound if I bought 8 pound of each.

That's a BIG savings. I've never used surplus.

What's the group opinions on this?

A pretty wide range of applications with those three, for sure. The two "gaps" I see for my loading would be a fast pistol powder--Bullseye or WW-231--and a medium rifle powder, which was served well by the now-long-gone WC-852's. I would substitute either IMR/H-4350 or maybe IMR-4320 in that niche.

My mode has been to use as much surplus powder in as many calibers and roles as possible.

AA #2 is usually available and is ok for cast in my pistol loads, 9mm, 45 Auto and the 38 & 44 specials.

On Hi-tech's website, they advertise IMR-4895 as surplus for $87.

Wouldn't that be a duplication of the powder selection above?
